An interesting change to mining

I was thinking about mining, and how they could make it more interesting and better for people willing to put in some extra time and be active while mining, while maintaining the functionality for everyone who wants to AFK mine.

Instead of different kinds of rocks in the belt, the belt would just contain general asteroids.

Each asteroid would be like an onion with the highest end minerals at the center coming slowly out to the lowest end veldspar and scordite on the outside.

You could visually look at the asteroid and see what layer you're on, or you could use an ore scanner. regular mining lasers and strip miners would mine from the outside in and you would visually see the change in the asteroid as it went from veldspar to scordite to plagioclase.

The interesting part would be the deep core miners. They would use crystals to determine which type of ore to mine, and they could pull it from that layer directly

Of course CCP could spawn different levels of thickness on different layers to maintain the balance of ores in a given location.

Thoughts?

I see hordes of deep core miner badgers sucking the high value middles out of asteroids and leaving noobs with whatever the cheapest minerals are, since the deep core miners would be able to choose their target mineral, and the noobs could not.

Put something like this in lowsec or nullsec and it might be interesting though.

Make it so the exhumers had a bonus in this area, to justify they time and effort above a regular barge.

(They should be better at the deep core aspect, having better systems for such use)

OP, how is this any different from mining as it is at the moment?

1. Mine an asteroid till it pops, move to next asteroid.

or

2. Fit a crystal and mine the high end ore till that is depleted, move to next roid.

The problem with mining is NOT what ores you mine.

I'll just leave this here:

Quote:
Lets do a quick experiment here...

Take mineral values.... set next to refined amounts.... to m3 per ore.....

isk/m3 values for major ores.... sort descending....

#1: Mercoxit 277.72 isk/m3 (I don't think anybody is surprised here)
#2: Arkonor 259.13 isk/m3 (again, surprised?)
#3: Scordite 217 isk/m3 Wait, what?
#4: Plagioclase 211.26 isk/m3
#5: Bistot 190.69 isk/m3
#6: Veldspar 189.19 isk/m3 Surely... that must be a mistake?

the interesting thing about a player driven economy is that all of the prices are dictated by the players . . . what do you want CCP to do about it? veldspar is high isk/m^3 because everyone wants things that take a whole ton of trit.

What should CCP do?

ok, now we have a good utility for scanner modules...
