This is not an uncommon refrain from the super-carebear set. If you're a scamming, ganking, heartless ******* in the game, then you must be a scamming, ganking, heartless ******* out of the game.

It is, of course, just a bunch of wishful thinking by those who want to feel better about their loss. Raise themselves to a higher level of morality than their perpetrator. It's to absolve themselves of their own stupidity. Every stupid loss in this game could have been easily avoided.

Goonswarm is often the target of this unfounded vitriol. Whether it's because The Mittani scammed a Titan sale, acting as a trusted third-party (hello, Google is your friend), or Hulks are ganked (hello, d-scan and a tank), or an entire trade hub is put under siege for a weekend (hello, you there, under that rock.)

Who we decide to be in EVE Online (or any virtual world) is not who we are in the real world. For the most part. Certainly there are people who are assholes in game as they are out of game. But that's certainly not a maxim. Far from it.

I think this site sums up the heartfelt generosity of a group of people who are generally seen by a certain segment of EVE's population as misanthropic, degenerate, narcissistic and bordering on the psychopathic.

Donations are certainly coming from people from outside Goonswarm, but certainly most of the donations are coming from the very people who served under and flew with Vile Rat. $23000 donated in under 24 hours. Charity and philanthropy are not hallmarks of psychopathic narcissists, especially when said philanthropy is anonymous and without obligation.

Kudos to Goonswarm and all the other degenerates who are helping the family of Sean Smith/Vile Rat. The world of EVE Online and the world outside EVE Online could do with more of your ilk.

Generally people tend to take on a different persona over the net, but that said persona is always based to a small degree on your true self. It doesn't mean that you're an ******* in RL if you act as one in a game like EVE, but on the other hand your true self still gets a kick from it, right? It's not a matter of hard case yes or no's but rather the degree.

There is no such thing as a complete different personality, with the exception if you happen to suffer from DID.

The main reason I play an MMO is to immerse myself into the role playing aspect and become something in game that I am not in real life. Just because I chose the life of a pirate in game does not mean that I sail the high seas with Somali pirates off the coast of Africa.

Some people just don't understand the RPG bit in MMORPG, Goons may roleplay at being arseholes, just as anyone else in game can roleplay at being successful entrepreneurs, combat pilots, arseholes or immortals with no morals. It's like being an actor, you can be a cannibalistic mass murderer with a collection of freaky dolls in a film, it is simply role playing, how people behave in character is not necessarily how they behave in real life.

Most importantly thank you for the link to the fundraiser in honour of Vile Rat, it's heartwarming to see how the community in general has reacted to this sad news, it shows to the gaming world that although we play a game where skullduggery and backstabbing are the norm we are human just like everyone else.

Someone who get's a feeling of empowerment over others by having this little collection I suppose. Healthier then someone collecting real bodies though.
