Although I did not know Vile Rat, the senseless violence and subsequent loss of wonderful life on this day is felt regardless of whom you are or where your affiliation lies. On behalf of my family, we say "Rest in peace Vile Rat" and give our deepest condolences to the loved ones left behind.

Shoot blues, tell Vile Rat.

People who play EVE all too often confuse the in-game actions and personalities of the characters played with their real life counterparts. If this senseless tragedy accomplishes anything positive in the tiny corner of the world that is the EVE community, I hope it helps people remember that even the most “Vile Rat” can be, in reality, a warm and funny guy with friends and family that care about him.

This...so much this...it cannot be emphasized enough.

Very well written blog. Thank you Seleen and the rest of the CSM for that blog. Sean (Vile Rat) Smith will be missed. A Goon he may have been in EVE but he was a great human being in reality. My sympathies to his family and friends.

Bounties for all! https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=2279821#post2279821

Together with thousands of diplomats, lobbyists and officials Sean lived and worked in my city The Hague, his death of course was major news in the city.

The embassy has officially made a statement on their website showing a picture that after 2 seconds gives you the feeling you know the guy or at least wished you had a chance to get to know him.
For what its worth coming from a stranger; i wish his son, daughter and wife strength to get through these hard times.

The U.S. Embassy in The Hague mourns the loss of treasured colleague and friend Sean Smith. Sean died in the recent attacks on the U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Benghazi, Libya.

Sean was a valued and dedicated employee of our Embassy and volunteered for a short-term assignment in Libya.

The Embassy staff sends its condolences to wife Heather, daughter Samantha and son Nathan and the rest of his family.

We will miss him.

Just got back into EVE from a two year break. I am in the military, and This was Awesome. brought me to the verge of tears just thinking about it all the impact we have on eachother. A fellow bother in arms he was and always will be. I can only hope that I will have the opertunity to effect other in both worlds a fraction of the way he did.

CNN Identifies him in the following article, and includes a photo of him. Refers to him being an online gamer.

They quote the Mittani as well in the article.

Sorry if somebody already posted this, my phone is acting up and I'm using it to browse. Having problems navigating the forums for some reason.

Nah, i was actually scanning through the posts to see and link this as well. Thank you, ccp, for the opportunity of reading this and headlining this on the client. Probably will never see goons the same again; my heart is changed forever. For the living, we remember our dead.

A fellow Canadian said it best...

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

R.I.P. Martin Abildgaard 'Carth Jared' a machine gunner who went out of his way to make the world a better place. Didn't receive the media exposure some have, but all the more important for it.

See you on the flipside buddy.

A long time ago I played a text based online game in which almost 7,000 Nerdy McNerdysons like me fought over virtual land. It was great fun. Our alliance of almost 200 players lost a great player and leader to the original September 11th attacks. Our community was strong and prevailed, and I am happy to see the same in the Eve Online community.

Games like Eve Online and the people that play them helped me get over some of the hate in my heart from that original loss. I am glad that MMOs bring people from around the world together where we can have fun and work out our differences without bloodshed. If only more people were exposed to this wonderful thing.

Sean Smith, I do pray that you have reached a wonderful universe with an unlimited supply of Rifters and blues to shoot.

RIP Vile Rat, I did not know him personally but as a veteran of Iraqi and still under the employment of the US Army my heart and prayers go out to the RL Sean Smith family. As a service member I know what its like to play Eve in far away places. I was stuck on a COP in Mosul and this game is the best escape for those stressful days and nights taking fire. Once again RIP Vile Rat (Sean Smith)
