Always knew there was something wrong with WOW :

Let's hope CCP isn't doing this too ;-) Twisted

I admit the graphics of WoW are pretty bad, they'd have to watermark it so people don't think it's a cheap copy from China. EVE online however is beautiful and needs no such thing. Only SpaceEngine comes close and it is free.

i wish i could be surprised, but it was to be expected

i'd be however surprised if this is an exception.
one could quite simply add things like that into phpBB forums (not admitting anything here!Big smile)

It's pretty clever if you read up on it. The data contained in the water mark doesn't contain any personal info, it's only useful in helping blizzard link accounts to screen shots. Means that if they come across someone trying to sell their account, boasting about botting or some other exploit they just track down the account and ban hammer them :)

Nothing new. Steganography has been used by EVE alliances in their spy/counterspy metagame.
Wouldn't surprise me if CCP had put in some watermarking scheme somewhere.

i think that greatly depends on your definition of "personal info". you'd be surprised what you can do with "only" the account name, the time the screenshot was done and the server.

there is no need to reveal the data, they can at least encrypt it

also: glad that i do not play wow

Why wouldn't they want to watermark stuff?

Because distributing accountnames and IP-adresses in public is a bad thing. The data can be gathered by 3th parties and crosslinked to other data, used for dictionary attacks, ...

There is no need for this data in the screenshots; they should not have implemented this.

The point is in this case the IP address was the address of the server not the user, and the account reference was an internal reference that's only of use IF you have access to Blizzards account database - and if you have access to that it's a little more serious than this story!

Lets face it, the story is sensationalist

It should be pointed out that ownedcore pride themselves on exploiting games so they can brag about it. This is so Blizzard can shut down private WoW servers.

I am ashamed to admit I actually played wow but EVE showed me the way and with that knowledge I actually profited off of blizard and I would have made more but they froze my account. One must take advantage of childish games and its so easy to scam children, get in my van little kiddies.

This is why you don't use dictionary words for your passwords. Also, why you theoretically don't use the same password on any other site.

This seems like a smart way to maintain ownership of digital intellectual property of this nature.
