So, my girlfriend just started Eve and is overwhelmed by all of the acronyms and the relationships that take place in 0.0. I try to explain it to her, but she really wants a comprehensive guide. Is there anywhere or anyone that has written this sort of thing? A comprehensive guide of 0.0 since it's inception? Thanks!

first there was nothing, then there was New Eden, then there was Concord, then concord decided they didn't give a **** about the outsides and 0.0 was born! Big smile

You'll find that the history of 0.0 often changes depending on the teller due to the polarization of peoples viewpoints. Kinda like real life!

I don't think you will ever find one single comprehensive start to finish timeline and history (We've got an internal one that is rife with our propaganda and even it's messy, and spotty in places).

I'd just pick subjects and read them.

The Great War

The fall of Lotke Voltera

The first Titan kills.

The Disbanding of BoB

The Disbanding of Goonswarm

And I'm going to call the year before last "The death of the old guard"; an entire Saga where BoB's latest iteration IT alliance and the Northern Coalition both implode within a very short timeframe.

Aside from the HBC partial break from the CFC I don't think anything super noteworthy is going on right now.

The Sov wars in the North and South aren't particularly venomous, or "Climate changing" it's mostly just dudes doing things.

no
bits and pieces have been written here and there as the events happened, some events were individually documented (like Mittani's Sins of a Solar Spymaster for example), but between the number of principal actors having moved on and hazy recollections of things that have moved on since the early years nearly a decade ago, creating a collected history of EVE's early days beyond an extremely cursory version is probably impossible

I have seen some rather succinct summaries posted on non-official sites over the years, but my google-fu is failing me now. Anyway, evelopedia has some decent articles on the older stuff, I would suggest starting reading about M0o and continue on to Band of Brothers, Goonswarm, Mercenary Coalition and so on. It is sorely lacking in the new stuff though, so you won't get a picture of how the current powerbloc balance came to be.

At first there was silence

then Eve was born

the Nullsec appeared

The Neckbeard shutins had a reason to live but more importantly

For the first time in their lives they felt important.

It's a shame their isn't a comprehensive guide to the history of nullsec, it might give new players more of a reason to be interested, assuming the nullsec elitists want new players they haven't handpicked from their external communities to be interested in nullsec.

We want more people and more money in nullsec. Aside from our areas nullsec is mostly barren places where pets are shoved or moons are mined. Nothing more. Entire alliances LIVE in highsec but come back to defend nullsec. We think a better situation would be people both living in and defending nullsec.

I could go on for hours about the risk/reward disparity... but I won't.

It would be interesting if CCP itself were somehow able to draw on backlogs and such to create and publish a book on the history of EVE Nullsec, than again I suspect they could be the most biased of all. P

Our Skymarshal who ran most of our last several successful military campaigns is a girl. As is our logistics director. They exist so long as the frothing drooling idiots don't run them off with all the "A GIRL ON THE INTERNET LET ME PAY ATTENTION TO HER" stuff.

you'll have to scrape together the various bits & pieces and will still be left with an incomplete picture.

It's also doubtful if this information would be of much value as it's sheer quantity would be daunting.

You may have read about the CFC+HB evicting the "SoCo" from Delve, Querious and Period Basis as one of the major events of recent history.
But the sov structure TEST & friends destroyed in summer had only been established in mid March (Cascade Imminent leaving, Red Alliance moving in, Vera Cruz and S2N shuffling their sov holdings around, Romanian Legion, HUN and various pets leaving, ...), was still sorting out territorial disputes when PL and TEST started to interfere and only started to come together as a "coalition" when the war was already underway.
2 years from now you will only remember that in 2012 TEST grabbed three regions from the evil "Southern Coalition" and all the pesky details will get lost.

Similarly the current war in the north - the CFC evicting NCdot from Tribute may find its way into the history books but that half a year ago NCdot was still fighting as part of the "honeybadgers" side-by-side with TEST and PL will probably get lost.

EVE politics are too complex and chaotic to keep track of even over the course of a few months. A few headline-worthy events will be remembered but knowledge of their mere existence is useless without knowing the context in which they occurred - which is a ***** to reconstruct as it tends to be streamlined, sanitized and outright substituted ex post by the victors ("We've always been at war with Eastasia.").

I could (but won't) tell you the story of the last few years in 0.0 in a way that makes sense to you, includes all the factual highlights and fits into 2-3 forum posts - of course all the glue between the highlight events and all the omissions of events that would contradict the flow of my "history" would be pure bullshit.
