While I did not know Sean personally, I do know a number of others connected to various consulates from around the world. Their contributions to MMOs have always been substantial since their inception. It is as if their special abilities allow them to reach into the hearts of others and for the moments we share in the game, they permit us to put aside our frail cultural differences and play together, sometimes with real world enemies, in a united bond of friendship that is created by our desire to build real bridges between real people.

I am saddened not only for the loss of Sean, who by all accounts was an outstanding individual both online and offline, but for his family, friends, consulate associates, Eve companions, CCP and CSM who have lost not only a valued player, but a person that has contributed towards making both the world and Eve a more welcoming environment to all those that are mature enough to understand the opportunities virtual worlds offer us in the real world too.

My condolences to the Goons, Sean’s virtual family of Eve. Any new player that enters Eve Online can soon see that you are nothing like some immature people paint you. It is a well-known fact that in the most games the most evil empire usually houses some of the most mature and thoughtful people in any game. I would fly with you anytime.

My condolences to his wife and children, the American Consulate and the American people.

One does not need to be an American citizen to recognize Sean’s value, one only needs to be a human being. This is why the vast majority of people in Eve will support the statement made by President Obama on this incident.

I understand that Eve Online was one of the first MMOs in the world to create a virtual government, CSM. It is perhaps a historic event when a person is honored both by their real government and their virtual government. So thank you Mark (aka Seleene) for your valuable and moving statement on behalf of the Eve community.

Fly well Sean

Goons are amongst the most loyal and honorable friends you'll ever have. When you're ~in~ you're treated in a realm of equals who will go to no ends to help and assist where needed.

Vile Rat was one of those Goons who accepted people for who they are and worked hard to help anywhere. He is already missed amongst his peers and will never be forgotten. His impact on EVE can't be summed up in a few words. His passion and eagerness to lend guidance to people who allied himself with will always call to mind a man with a warm heart and positive individual.

I regret my last conversation with him being an ~issue~ that needed handling.

I have only been in the game for a while but even I have seen the amazing people that make this game what it is. My thoughts go out to the family and I am pretty sure that there is a whole community of people that want to extend their deepest condolences. May he rest in peace.

RIP VR.

Thank you Seleene. If anything, this tragedy has shown us yet again the true fraternity and strength of the EVE community, that continues to humble and awe us devs.

Requiescat in [s]pace.

Keep watching us blue shooters, from your final place among the stars, VR. Your legacy will be forever with us.

And to show how widely heartfelt the loss is, let me link something made by our ~enemies~, who turned brothers in mourning such an oustanding guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaZ6t7aub50

Godspeed in heavens, diplo of my heart.

Last time I spoke to VR was a few years ago when he was promising me that my Rorqual had safe passage out of Wicked Creek. You can guess how that ended.

If I still owned a Rorq, I'd self destruct it in your honor. RIP Buddy

RIP Sean Smith.

I never personally knew him, but knew of him...I may have even shot him, or been shot by him, back in my Atlas days...none the less, this is a very sad loss. All who knew him, as well as his family can be proud that his passing was while on duty for his country - no greater honor can be founded.

Even though Seans loss is a high profile loss (not just in an EVE context, but a World one as well), we should also take a moment to remember all the brave souls that have been lost while serving their country.

Fly safe amongst the heavens Vile Rat.

This has been running through my head all day. Don't know why this bothers me so much, but it does.

Yesterday - The Beatles

RIP Sean (Vile Rat) Smith.

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday...

Vile Rat, it's not half the game it used to be
There's a shadow hanging over Eve
Oh, yesterday, came suddenly...

Why, He, Had to go
I don't know, they couldn't say...
We, Said, Something wrong
Now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday, Eve was such an easy game to play
Now my pod just wants to hide away
oh I believe in yesterday...

Why'd he have to go
I don't know, they couldn't say...
we said something wrong
now I long for yesterday...

Yesterday, Eve was such an easy game to play
Now my pod just wants to hide away
oh I believe in yesterday...
