Can I learn ships from other races?

Can I learn ships from other races? Shall I be just as good with them as those other races are, do they get some kind of edge? The reason I'm asking this is because while my race seems to have great drone ships, doesn't it seem to have any good ships with missilles, what race has very good missile ships(cruiser or less, the rest I can't afford).

BTW, I'm really enjoying eve, it has a lot of depth and it has this great open world aspect that many level based MMORPG simply miss. And the best thing is that I don't need to grind levels or skills, they simply come over time.

Yes. The skill books to use ships of other races are not restricted.

If you train the appropriate skills relating to the ship you're flying, there is no reason you shouldn't be able to fly it effectively. The only edge anyone receives is based on skills.

The Caldari are known for their preference to missile usage and have ships specifically designed for such use.

Also some ships require you to be cross trained. For instance the Bhaalgorn requires you to have both Amaar and Minmatar trained up to battleship level. While long to train for and usually quite expensive these cross breed ships do get seperate bonus' for each faction. (eg. Minmatar Battleship bonus and Amaar Battleship Bonus)

That's one of the things I've always liked about EVE. You don't restrict yourself to a class. The only barrier between you and flying any ship in the game is time...and a little bit of ISK :). Versatility is a lot of fun I think.

The Guristas ships are the cross-breed between Caldari and Gallente, so they're based both on missiles and on drones, although with drone as the primary weapon type (at least for the battleship, the largest of those ships, the Rattlesnake), and they shield-tank.

Anyway, if you want to cross-train for missile-using ships, you can perhaps look at Amarr which is supposed to have a few missile-using ships, and maybe Minmatar has a few too (I'm not sure), but by far the most missile-happy race is Caldari.

Of frigate-sized ships, we have the Merlin and the Kestrel.

The Merlin has a good tank, and is fairly easy to fit (decent CPU and powergrid), but has a schizo weapons system, with 2 hardpoints for missile launcher modules and 2 hardpoints for gün modules. That's quite frustrating.

The Kestrel has less tank, and is harder to fit, but has 4 hardpoints for missile launchers, and a nice big bonus to missile damage.

Of T2 frigates, the Hawk, an Assault Ship, is like a cross between Kestrel and Merlin. It's a bit expensive, and many say (truthfully, I think) that Assault Ships are underpowered relative to what on has the right to expect from a T2 ship, especially the Hawk, but the Hawk is still usable and it will hopefully get a boost in the winter expansion.

There are no T1 destroyers that use missiles, and hte T2 Caldari destroyer, the Flycatcher, is a bit of an acquired taste.

In cruiser-land, you have the Caracal, which is a good overall ship, with peraps more gank than tank but reasonable to fit. There's also a faction version, the Caracal Navy Issue, which is just overall better but costs a lot. Then there's the T2 version, the Cerberus, which is also overall better than the vanilla Caracal, and there's the Osprey Navy Issue which is seen as a bit of a joke but can actually fight a bit and is very fast (the vanilla Osprey is a mining cruiser, though).

The T3 cruiser is the Tengu, a ship built of hull components so you can configure it for many different uses, but Tengu are horribly expensive. There's also the T1 Drake and its bigger brother the T2 Nighthawk, Drake being a battlecruiser (BC) and Nighthawk being a command ship (requiring a lot of skillz), but the Nighhawk isn't quite gank enough to warrant its cost.

For battleships, BS, there's the Raven, and the upgraded Raven Navy Issue, or if you want to use short-range torpedoes there's the Marauder class Golem (Marauders are like T2 battleships).

Only missile-using ships. I know almost nothing about gün-based ships, or about armour-tanking ships. And I know little about PVP.

I'm a missile-using shield tanker, with a minor in drones. And I'm also a noob. 4 and a half years old, and still a noob, about many aspects of the game.

The Khanid ships tend to use missiles too:

Note that they are all T2, many of them also require extensive training in other fields in order to simply fly the hull much less fit them.

I just finished the training for a Kestrel and I really like missilles, always hitting is a huge advance ! Especialy if you have trouble staying at optimal range(like I did with gallante ships). I uotfitted my Kestrel with 3 standard missile launchers to begin with, but what type of launchers and missiles would be best for early newbie PVE?

Am currently also training caldari frigates 4 so I can learn caldari cruisers after that Big smile

The great thing about this game is that if you're sick of being a miner or whatever you've chosen to do, you don't have to make a new character from scratch. You can keep the skills you already have and start training for another role that suits you better.

I must've chanced my profession a dozen times over the course of my characters lifespan. She started off as a salvager, turned ninja salvager, miner, industrialist, mission runner, trader, 0.0 pvp grunt, WH dweller, Planetary Interaction guru, piracy, high sec griefer, and now I'm back as a WH dweller again because I loved it.

Yes in other MMORPG's would I have to start again as caldari pilot, but here can I simply learn those Caldari skills in addition to the Gallente skills I have already learned. I can always go back to gallente ships. I also love that this training doesn't involve any grinding but simply happens over time.

Actually, a well-fitted Hawk is a pretty good little ship in a lot of scenarios, I'd never flown one till recently, and fitted one just to see what it could do, and tbh I was very pleasantly suprised. Especially vs npc's the missile range and damage bonuses work out nicely.
