Research Log Entry One

Completed first survey of salvage worthy ruins today. Many broken and worn components, all handed over to [REDACTED]. Salvaged components from defensive drones split with other members of expedition.

Research of combat capabilities of the Sleeper drones continues. Combat capabilities remind me of old Sansha vessels. I wonder if there is a connection or simply parallel lines of research.

Initial indications that these are "ancient" drones may be partially incorrect. My belief is that these drones are actually reconfigured from the Sleeper structures found.

UPDATE:Current research suggests older designs may have been "given" to current W-space "Sleeper" culture. Newer designs based on these older vessels, as well as habitats. Further research required to verify.

Deep scans of the structures show formations quite similar to the "front" end of many sleeper ships. Analysis of wreckage confirms the use of nano technology, most notably in the form of heuristic self-assemblers. These devices are able to reconfigure, as far as I can tell, the armor plating of Sleeper ships in order to enhance their defenses.

UPDATE:Further study suggests that these structures are simply transfer points, used to both recharge the vessels and transfer crew/prisoners/salvage

This may be the first clue to what I am seeing in these scans. If these vessels are indeed simply reconfigured hull sections, then this could explain the "new" look of the Sleeper vessels. It could also explain the huge amounts of data stored within these vessels.

More intriguing is information from a Thukker Mercenary recently employed by [REDACTED]. [REDACTED], a young pilot recently graduated from a Republic capsuleer academy, recently ran across what appears to have been a Sleeper drone in the Arnon system.

UPDATE:Whereabouts of the pilot mentioned in the report are unknown.

These ships are not what I first thought they were, by any stretch of the imagination. I first assumed these to simply be remnants of the Sleepers, which they could very well be. Upon closer examination, they seem to be far more complex an enigma than I originally thought. This research is definitely a new priority for me, as one large question still remains; who were the Sleepers as a culture, and what can we learn from these remnants of their ancient civilization can shed light on them?

Intel Report

08.29.114

Focus:
Missions in relation to the Sisters of EVE.
-Specific target of focus:
Possibility of Sleeper drones in local region.

Start event recall:

Location: Arnon IX – Moon 3 – Sisters of EVE Bureau

-Spoke to Sister Alitura about a distress signal received from a ship called The Damsel in local deadspace. Was sent to investigate. Wreckage suggested that fatal damage to structure occurred from within (no sign of attack from without). Ship log indicated a number of survivors. None found on location.

-Alitura suggested I talk to a CONCORD agent to track down the survivors to discover the cause of the incident.

-Contacted “Tervis Jak”, A CONCORD man in Tar. He alerted me to the fact that pirates were salvaging the wreck of The Damsel. Suggested I stop them and see if I could recover any info on the location of survivors.

-8 Blood Raiders found and neutralized at the wreck site. One of the pirates had salvaged a datacore that did not appear to be of known origin. Datacore sent to Alitura for analysis.

-Jak had located one of the survivors of The Damsel, a man named “Red”. He was on a convoy leaving the system. I intercepted to find the convoy under attack by Blood Raiders. 5 pirates neutralized. “Red’s” corpse recovered from wreck.

-I was recalled to Alitura who had been unable to decipher the datacore. The ship's janitor, Nebben Centrien, had been located stationed at a small outpost. Arrived at outpost to find it under attack by Serpentis ships. 5 pirates neutralized. Centrien recovered and offered to give the location of The Damsel’s cook.

-Location gained for the ships cook, Aubrei Azil, who had also shipped out. Alitura questioned how all the survivors had secured passage so quickly and stated that she thought someone was attempting to hide them along with their knowledge about The Damsel. Azil’s transport was found disabled and under attack by 6 “Splinter Alvi” rogue drone frigates. After the drones were neutralized, Azil was taken back to Alitura.

-The ships doctor, Dr. Lujia Elban, had been taken hostage by Serpentis agents and I was sent to make the ransom drop. After the drop was made, I was attacked by the Serpentis. 5 neutralized. Dr. Elban recovered.

-The Damsel’s Engineer Tahaki Karin found to be aboard the ship The Heartbreak. I intercepted The Heartbreak just before it came under fire by more of the strange drones. 7 drones neutralized. Karin returned to Alitura.

-The datacore had been found to be made by the strange drones that I had come across. Sent to contact Delphine Xarasier, an agent for CreoDron and the daughter of their chief researcher located at Harerget V - Moon 1 - CreoDron Factory for more info on the drones.

Location: Harerget V - Moon 1 - CreoDron Factory

-Xarasier sent me to investigate a report of total loss of drone control in a nearby area. Recovered corrupted drone components and returned them to Xarasier for diagnostics.

---Plan to continue investigation immediately. More information to come--

"Miss [REDACTED], how are we today?"

"We are fine; you seem flustered."

"Pardon?"

"Frustration. Voice fluctuations and pulse rate, erratic breathing. Lack of eye contact and..."

"Enough."

"Yes, enough."

"You told the guards you had something new."

"Yes, we require access to all information in regards to the Jovians."

"Oh. Nothing new, just a new theory."

"No, this is something new. We need corroborating evidence before we can finish our hypothesis."

"Perhaps you'd like to share?"

"Of course, professor."

"Well then, at your leisure."

"Certainly. Our current analysis of the information points to the Jovians not being what they appear to be."

"That certainly goes without saying, doesn't it?"

"No, it doesn't."

"Alright then, explain."

"That is what we were doing, was it not? I believe they do not develop their own technology but that they leach off of other cultures."

"That's hard to believe, Miss [REDACTED]. They're more advanced than anything..."

"...yes, and if you will allow me to continue I can properly phrase my theory."

"Of course, continue."

"If you had seen the technology the Sleepers possess first hand, and had the mind to see, you would be able to understand it."

"Assume for a moment I did not understand what you just meant. Explain."

"The technology the sleepers possess is nothing the Jovians don't have."

"A simple explanation."

"Yes. The Jovians had access to Sleeper, Talocan, Takmahl... all the technology they would need, long before we could."

"Debatable, but go on."

"Not debatable. They had access to technology we never did."

"Where is this going Miss [REDACTED]?"

"The Jovians are scavengers."

"I see."

"No, you don't. Scavengers. Their culture has 'fallen' a few times as well."

"How does that..."

"I am getting to it. They had their own technology to build upon, but also access to the advanced technology of other cultures."

"I..."

"...if you say 'I see' one more time I will rip your eyes out. Good. Now listen. They gave us capsule technology. They deal with us for other technology. They want us to share technology freely."

"That's..."

"Do shut up. I am trying to show you what I mean. They wish for us to develop that which they can't. You see, they do not think like we do. Or at least a majority do not."

"Interesting."

"Not really. They are stagnated; they have reached the limit of their existence, the limit of their capabilities."

"What is your theory, Miss [REDACTED]?"

"My theory is that there are potentially three distinct factions of the Jovians. The first, those who simply wish to nurture us and allow us to grow naturally. A second, who wish to use us to develop something they cannot. The third, those who would manipulate us into being their 'salvation', their escape from their imminent fate."

"But that is a theory, isn't it?"

"Of course; it is a theory grounded in reasonable inference. What we seek is a provable hypothesis."

"I... understand. You want to be able to prove something in regards to their intent."

"Smart boy, you learn quickly."

"What exactly do you need?"

"As I said, everything you and your organization has on the Jovians."

"That will take some time."

"We are patient."

Initial analysis indicates flawed reasoning. Verification of this flaw is required before continuing research.

I am simply a concerned citizen of New Eden. I have been asked to keep the source of this information private. However, the subject of the recordings can easily be found with the proper search parameters.

Does this sufficiently answer your query?

I've already found the subject don't worry. But I am yet unsure as to why this information is being made public in this manner.

Frankly Ms. Sentience, what is the point of this? What are you making this information public for?

The point is to provide information and insight that might otherwise go unnoticed. Is that wrong?

it is the nature of the information. It seems rather random and unfocused. Is there a theory you are trying to put forward? Because if it is, as you say, merely to get the data out there, then I am puzzled, because it doesn't seem to be very focused. Perhaps compile all of this into a research report and submit it that way?

The source of the information, as you may have deduced already, is very unfocused. My goal currently is to simply put the information out there, and then follow up on any leads produced. I do intend on compiling the findings into a report, but at this point going over old reports first seems like a wise decision.

There is also no specific theory presented that I am currently pursuing. A fresh set of eyes on old data sometimes produces new insights and revelations. Perhaps someone else can see something that I missed, or bring up a new line of inquiry.

I've learned that patience is a virtue in this type of investigation, and we have plenty of time to practice it.

In that case it may be wise to submit all of your raw data at once so that we can go over it in the proper context. As it stands there is just not enough yet available to glean any insights from beyond the content of the data itself.

It is not my place to decide. I will endeavor to acquire permission.

Okay, you daft little abomination, I'll just give you the answer you want.

The Sleepers are Jovians. It's not that hard to figure out. Nomenclature used in the Mirror, technological similarities, everything points to that glaringly obvious answer. Stop using my logs. They're there for anyone to freakin' find, so it's not some "brilliant observation that no one gets". No one wants to hear it! Okay? Everyone's happy in their little bubbles flying around doing whatever pops into their head.

No one cares about Sleepers! If they did they wouldn't be killing them just to make a profit!

Strip the corpses, sell the parts, learn what you can. I just don't see the point in seeing them as anything else anymore since no one else does.

I believe anyone involved in the infamous "Blazing Angels mining belt incident" last year (19.07.113YC to be precise; further reading available at an external GalNet link) might beg to differ. Calling in capship support, to defend a mining site under attack by Sleepers, is no trivial matter.

That's not what I meant, and you know it.

As a whole, Sleepers are seen as simply targets, or--when they are more "reactive" than normal--a threat.

Stripping hulls and preparing for war seem all that we are capable of. Am I wrong?
