There can't be only one. Alien, Aliens, Brazil, Empire Strikes Back, Blade Runner....

Aw screw it, can you really have just one favorite? https://www.google.com/search?q=best+sci+fi+movies

Terminator 2.

It lacks spaceships, but makes up for that in virtually every other way.

Blade Runner but since it's already mentioned I'll settle for Gattaca.

Here's my pick and why I think you should watch them!

Alien - amazing set design, terrifying, Sigourney Weaver is hot. Aliens was good too but it lacked the truly isolated feeling of the first film and was too much bravado/action in place of suspense and character development.

2001: A Space Odyssey - captivating art direction and photography, revolutionary for its time and still the darkest, most chilling portrayal of AI gone wrong I've seen yet. This is an absolute must-see.

Ghost in the Shell - Dystopic, convincing imagination of a world that has become completely inter-connected via a universal network. Bio mechanical cop heroine contemplates the 'ghost' (her soul) in the 'shell' (her artificial body). Strong theme of existentialism and some of the most gorgeous cityscapes of any science fiction premise - the opening sequence is particularly breathtaking.

Others I like but not with the same zeal as ^ are:

Akira
Solaris
Blade Runner
Sunrise
Children of Men
Moon
Inception
Wall-E
Lord Arakkis
The Scope
Gallente Federation

I must say that AVP was the first game I played with 4.1 surround sound... Did not get much sleep that night :)

Before I forget... has anyone seen "Darkstar" with the alien that's a beach ball and an existential AI bomb :)

Never seen this, early Carpenter so I will check it out for sure

This is a set of movies where you have the dilemma of which is better? The first because it was truly great and the start of the series, or the 2nd which IMO better in the sense that it did true justice to continuing a great movie.

And the fact that a director found a way to get a great performance from Arnold by playing to how he acts naturally is something not many realize.

All great movies, im biased so Im totally not with your assessment of Aliens (lol). Ghost in the shell was great, the series even more so. It was kinda like watching an anime mix of CSI/X-Files if you get the meaning. Id put Akira higher simply because it was such an impressional movie on me and my art career

I quite liked David Lynch's Dune.

Yes it was nowhere near as good as the books, yes the whole "wierding module" **** didn't really work but it had a decent stab at representing the wheels-within-wheels factiony politicking that pervades the Dune novels.

It is also quite the worst piece of unashamedly gingerist propoganda I've ever seen. Every single last one of the Harkonnens is disturbingly ginger... this has to have been deliberate. If he'd shot the film using just black actors to represent the Harkonnens there would have been an uproar, but as it was ginger folk everyone was OK with that as it's not like they actually have souls.

Still, if you overlook (temporarily demoted to ginger) Sting's uberbad overacting, there were some reasonably believable performances in there and it was as epic in scale as I'd have expected having read the book.

One original thought is worth a thousand mindless quotings - Diogenes.

Yeah I've watched the standalone complex stuff too - great series.

Akira is visually stunning, I'm not surprised :D Such an epic movie.. if there's any other mention of anime sci-fi i've really enjoyed, Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind, Memories and Metropolis are all up there with the favourites.

While I agree on some points, I have to say that being perfectly secure in my manhood, Sting in a futuristic Harkkonen speedo more than makes up for his acting. lol

Metropolis and Steamboy were fantastic. And if you havent already, I strongly suggest Princess Mononoke and Howls Moving Castle. Also, very much worth a sci fi look is Battle Angel Alita. See.It.Now!

I found Princess Mononoke pretty dull actually, but loved Howl's Moving Castle. Spirited Away is another favourite :) Ghibli films are the best eh.. haven't heard of Battle Angel Alita nor Steamboy, will check them out!

Yea Battle Angel is based off a comic I read in my early teens, great stuff. Steamboy is good too, but mostly for the great art direction Miyazaki is known for.

Also one I really enjoyed was Phenomenon with John Travolta. A bit on the saccharine side, but it plays to some of what sci fi enthusiasts/medical experts believe about cancer and unexpected side effects from it.
