Just like High School

In high school I knew this guy Jimmy Stern. He was socially ackward, wore glasses, over weight and pasty. He wasn't what most would consider in the 'cool kid' crowd. I knew the guy played video games and at parties he and I would talk about that. So I was around him enough to know that no one gave him the time of day.

Halfway through our senior year he was racing another guy on a back road and had a head on collision with an oncoming car. He was killed instantly in the accident.

What followed was my first experience into the human psyche and how a majority of people react to knowing someone that died. Girls were crying, guys were saying how great he was, the year book did a memorial, so on and so forth. There I was remembering that I was probably one of five people that ever talked to the guy at parties and in school. I reflect back at this and have seen it many times since then any time someone I know dies.

I didn't know Vile Rat. Oddly enough I would of had a better chance at meeting him in person than through the game. We share the same line of work... well sort of he does IT and I do 'other stuff'. We know the risks we take with these positions and accept the risks. While the men killed in Libya are a senseless loss of life they are not the first, nor the last killed in that region, or the last Eve players to die.

Support and condolences are one thing but using it as a means of linking yourself to his death is needless... and much like what I have witnessed in the past. Naming a system after him? Doing a PLEX drive? I didn't know the guy but I can assume he wouldn't want the whole world and Department of State for that matter to know that he spent countless hours on a video game typing out absurd and nonsense. From this point forward when someone Googles his name that's the kind of crap they'll see.

This just reinforces my belief of always being anonymous on the internet. I have told the 5 people that know I play video games not to ever release logs, character names or anything if I'm ever killed....

You can go ahead and be ashamed of the video games you want to play. Besides, his online and real life personas were linked long before this when he participated in the CSM. RIP Vile Rat.

Well said. Yes, he was a fellow player, yes he was a human being that -probably- died most horrifically...

But, lets all give a collective round of condolences and get back to blowing the **** out of each others internet spaceships.

That is all.

Hi Everyone,

Today has been a really moving day, in sadness and in the absolute heart-felt outpouring from the community.

I beg that everyone please understands that this is a very sad time for a lot of people and to have a bit of compassion at this time.

Please consider that it might be 'too soon' to be making such distinctions at this time.

Whilst I appreciate your opinion, at this time, it can only serve to be imflammatory and as such I have no choice but to take it out of the loop.

I apologise and I hope you can understand why we're doing this at present.

Thank you and fly safe, everyone.
