EvE players: Wondering about age..?

I first heard of EvE about a year and a half ago. My actual subscription started only in January this year. (Had a few trial accounts beforehand; never got far enough to subscribe, and the initial learning curve was as usual a turn-off, which I eventually overcame)
One of my main experiences in EvE though, is that EVERYONE, but literally EVERYONE is older than me. I myself am turning 16 this week, and have yet to meet a person of similar age or younger... Aside from the learning curve and the stereotyping 13-year old internet kid attitude causing many young people to be thrown out early (something which I appreciate; don't get me wrong, I'm mostly wondering and wishfully thinking, not stating anything that I feel is too harsh or the like.), what would cause EvE to not really (again, in my experience) be played by younger players? ("younger" meaning mostly teens or people in puberty in this case :P)

(PS: I love the EvE community as far as I have experienced it ^___^ Free cookies for everyone! xD)

Our corp has about eight 30-ish year olds and two 14-year-olds. The younger guys do great and are some of the stronger players in the corp. Maybe they're just very mature acting for their age.

Many people don't really follow their own taste. We follow what a significant number of people from our own reference group like. That's how marketing works. Tell people that other people like product x more than product y, and everyone suddenly wants x.

When you are younger you are even more looking to be part of the group that is identified as "the cool kids". Eve is spreadsheets with a nice screen-saver ... Call of duty is the cooles thing ever (well at least since the last Call of duty).

Another reason is: eve is pretty boring if you just consider the core game without what the players add to the experience. If you were alone, there would not be much to do in eve.

But there is also a reason why older players may prefer eve over other games.

As you get older, your reaction time gets slower. It's not that you outright suck at FPS, but you noticeably get slower ... and it is frustrating to lose to 8 year old kids. Besides, what do you do in an FPS when you are just awake enough to hold a bottle of beer and watch TV ? Well, nothing ... But you can pretend to play eve while you slowly drift into sleep in fron of your TV.

Hmm, was that an answer to your question ?

Don't anger the forum gods.

sooo...what is your question OP?
I thought I knew the feeling of being the youngest player I met, then you posted.
I got you beat by about 7 years.

Not sure if I imagined the following but I'm sure that in one of the dev blogs they mentioned that the average age of those that voted in the recent CSM elections was something like 32, I also think I remember hearing this same age mentioned in a podcast I listened to as well. This may be why you don't encounter many around your age.

FFS, this makes me feel old (well, aside from general maturity level - that's still in the early 20's :P). At 32, I've now been playing EVE for the majority of my adult life (started in 2004).

Time needs to slow down, dammit!

This is one of the reasons I enjoy this game, the fact that I don't usually feel too old when chatting to people Big smile

Started playing when I was 31, and been going for almost 8 years now..

Big smile Very true. I like the Assassin's Creed series, but I'm closing on five decades age now. Sometimes I just go, "All this twitcher stuff takes too much energy and hassle. Think I'll just go play with my EVE skills queue."

Enjoying a few of these things already... For some reason I'm appearantly really interested in... i don't even know, whatever's written in this topic. xD (I should stop writing these at 0.30 am and start making sense... but how do I describe a strange interest in older people's ages in a video game anyway O_o)

The average age for EVE players is around 34, IIRC. It takes a certain seasoning as a gamer to find out what's good with it.

PS: by not creating a "look at my massive bazoongas" female avatar, you're mentally ahead of many, many older players... Lol

If you had lived just a few hundred years ago, you probably wouldn't have even made it to 55, most didn't.

With our current way of life and constantly improving medical technology, you've probably got another 50 years to go at least (barring any illnesses you may have, close encounters with buses, or the human species being wiped out by a race of intelligent machines).

I believe that it's simply because EvE requires more patience and concentration than most younger people today are willing to commit to a game. Everyone is different though, of course, and there are exceptions.

I'm 30 btw.
