hello.
last 6-7 years i am a mac user and i'm totally out of the pc-components industry so i'd like you to help me with my dilemmas about buying my new pc :)

my requirements are really simple, but concerning eve online, i'd like to be able to run 2 clients smoothly with AT LEAST medium settings. "smoothly" means that i will be satisfied with constant 30fps and "medium" settings means that i'd like to look at eve in a better way than like you put duke nukem in the universe. also, i'd like to have a pc which will be sufficient for next 2-3 years (not sure if i expect too much :)) of course, pc should be able to run few ram-intense applications in the background while i play eve...

my current configuration is this:
mbo - asrock H77 pro4
cpu - intel i5 3570
graphic - nvidia geforce GTX 560 TI
ram - 16g
some ssd disk (probably ocz vertex 4)
and a monitor, as cheap as possible :)

recently, i've seen this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_sKZpiyMss) which somehow answers my question, but i would really like to hear more opinions before i spend the money which i don't have in the first place :)))

thank you very much in advance for any help!

i completely agree, but unfortunately i am not currently in position to spend eur 500-1000 for a brilliant monitor :/ anyways it is an extremely easily replaceable 'component', so i'll stick with some cheap crap until i will have some money for something better.

The PC I built over a year ago has lower specs to the one you listed and I have no trouble running 2 clients at Medium settings at a constant 40-60 FPS.

For comparison:

- ASUS P7P55D
- i5 750
- 550 Ti
- 8gb RAM

The biggest addition I made was a 2nd monitor. Running 2 clients on one monitor is a pain in the ass. The 2nd monitor really opened up new avenues of gameplay and made my gaming experience significantly more enjoyable.

sorry for posting in wrong place :)

i want to say that i also have a dilemma regarding graphic card... 560TI or GTX 570... 560 is much cheaper and seems like it will handle my need without a problem... anyways i am ready to spend a little bit more to be able to look at the universe in a better way :)

A 560 Ti will get you up to 300 FPS (interval immediate, recommended to switch to interval one) for a single client at nearly full graphics detail (no AA) in FullHD resolution while station-spinning.
It should have absolutely no problem whatsoever running two instances at over 60 FPS in max detail, each on a separate screen, even in significantly more cluttered areas.
Even a 550 Ti will suffice (roughly up to around 190 FPS in similar circumstances).

You don't need to spend a small fortune on a monitor.
Something like this : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005289&Tpk=LG%20IPS235V will only set you back around 240$ (I actually bought mine for the equivalent of 220$ each, even if we pay a 24% VAT in my country, so the base price should be under 180$), while offering you the best benefit of an IPS panel (great viewing angle with decent contrast) in a fairly large format (23" FullHD).
I am VERY picky when it comes to monitors (the only reason I gave up my old 21" 1600x1200@85Hz CRT was because it was way too heavy and way too frail to move 150km away to my new home), and that one was the model I finally settled on (after careful consideration of price/performance of many other monitors).
It has a few minor flaws (slight violet tinge at extreme angles in very low light conditions, and the 60Hz limitation of most LCDs, could not bring myself to spend the money for any 120Hz models), but they can be quite easily overlooked, and overall, I am quite satisfied with it - planning to get two more soon, a second one for me, and one for my wife (and occasionally, as a third monitor for myself later on, after I upgrade to a video card that supports 3 monitors simultaneously from my current GTX 460 - most likely a GTX 660 if it comes out for not much over 200$ as starter price in the next few days, or maybe a Radeon HD 7850 otherwise - both should get about 25-30% better FPS than the card I have while using less wattage - but only buying it some time early next year, when it will hopefully be a bit cheaper).

I actually like to test drive my monitors in the store. Go to a best buy / Fry's / Microcenter and go and look at screens. Find one you like in the price range you have. I suggest more pixels and larger area just because the world is somewhat standardized to 21" and up these days.

As to graphics cards. Newegg had a special for an MSI twinforzer II gtx 560 for $140

thank you very much for helping, i'm certainly much smarter than before ^^ i already checked some of your recommendations and try to find them in my local shops... unfortunately getting stuff from outside of my country is pretty complicated and expensive here =/

560Ti it's ok for 2 monitors/clients at max details in fullHD, just fyi the best 560Ti is the MSI Twin Frozr II <---- 2 (the 3 is noisy). Better than that there is the same one but 2Gb even if you don't strictly need them for 2 clients.

Monitor? I own 2x Asus VE278Q, they are LED monitors, fast response time, perfect colors (talking about gaming) and freaking cheap for a 27'' screen (about 250 € each).

EVE on a 23''? uhm..... no thanks

You'll be fine on that setup. You can pick up 2 decent 23 in monitors for less than 400 US.

well since my budget is really modest and stuff here is more expensive that in US or around EU i will definitely go with one monitor for now... i'm used to play with two windowed clients on 17'' screen, so i thought that 23'' would be pretty nice in the beginning. of course i'd like to have 27'' but i doubt i'll have enough money for that now :'(
i did notice that MSI cards have really good reviews but for some reason it's hard to find them here :/ there's mostly 6xx series which are really too expensive for me atm... there are asus and gainward available which fit nicely in my budget and since not only my budget is modest but i am a modest person myself, i suppose that i'll be pretty satisfied with that solution :)

one more time, many many thanks for all the suggestions!

in this case asus is way better than gainward. I don't think that the asus cost much less than the MSI though, while the MSI is really of an upper level. Pretty much the same for the monitor. A 23'' LCD will cost you about 200 €, a 27'' LED 250 €.

I mean: consider how much you pay the difference from one product to the 'upper level one', not only the money you have to spend now. It could make you save more money for the future times ;)

And btw, the 660 Ti is really a bestbuy for the next 2 years at least eheh

So where is "here" exactly ?
Many online stores sell cheaper than brick-and-mortar stores (due to lower costs), so if we know what country you're from, we might guide you to a cheaper source within your own borders.
Or, you know,at least give you better (local) price estimates and/or an idea of what's actually available in your parts.

^^this

For EVE Online, I doubt anything will change over the next few years that a 660ti DX11 card cannot handle today, like tessellation.

CCP move very slowly for hardware changes/gfx changes and based on their plans, the 660ti looks very good and is the bargain of the year from nVidia.

680/90 were very interesting upon release, but the 670/60 are the ones taking the glory.

I'd also have a look at the Corsair Neutron range for SSD - they're brand new and lookin' very good for performance and stability.

And on the topic of monitors...you could take a look for any A-MVA/S-MVA/S-PVA panels, which give very good quality image at wide angles, and do not cost as much (typically) as an IPS panel - and if they do cost as much, they normally have better connections, features, and quality etc.

I'd also recommend against 1920x1080 as a maximum res, as 1900x1200 will give you a much larger screen perceptually, with more room and generally much more desktop real-estate. I know it's only 230,400 pixels difference, but it's all in the vertical, and this is where the difference really matters in something like EVE.

1080P just looks so...squashed...and is really a cheapo 16:9 television resolution, not proper desktop computing.

Actually, the 2 GB GTX 660 (no Ti at the end) has just launched today at a pricepoint of 230 USD (vs the 300 USD of a 2 GB GTX 660 Ti), the same price point the 1 GB GTX 460 launched a bit over 2 years ago.

The 660 (no Ti) features a target power use of 115 W (with a max TDP of 140 W), vs the 134 W power target of a Ti version (with a 150 W max TDP).
Its performance is about 15% lower than the Ti version (depending on game, can vary between almost the same to 25% lower).
However, it is outperforming GTX 460 by up to about 75%, which is a very pleasant surprise (I was honestly only expecting at most 40% extra, and only in certain situations).

So, I would say that overall, right now, the GTX 660 is a better buy than the 660 Ti.
Of course, that's just my personal opinion.

I'm currently running:

AMD FX 4100 Quad Core 3.60ghz
8GB Ram
Nvidia Geforce 550TI GTX

And can run 2 clients, 1 per screen, at high setting with 30 FPS

As for screens I make do with cheap second hand montiors. One is a 19" Square Dell thing like you would get at in an office and cost me £15. My main screen is a Packard Bell 21" monitor widescreen which i picked up for £23 :)

However if your looking for a good screen and have a little money to spend then http://www.tech-buyer.co.uk/extra.aspx?me=techbuyer&pn=I2353FH is a very VERY good monitor for a low price =)

I'll see that 660 and raise you a 650, for EVE.

And LG have a new monitor coming in Q412 or Q113, which apparently is an IPS 21:9 29inch monitor that I'm interested in as muti-monitor setups have that horrible bezel in between panels. The vertical is 1080, but I think I could live with that for so much horizontal pwnage on one panel.
