Is there any point scanning beyond a system's outermost orbit?

Title says it all really - are there ever any cosmic signatures to be found outside of the outermost orbit of a system? E.g. is the largest orbit is 16 AU, is there any point scanning out to 32 AU? Or are all the sites enclosed within the size of the system?

As a full time explorer, i've not found a sig yet that laid outside of the outer most planet in a system. Maybe a tiny bit, but only within the small area surrounding the actual outermost planet/gate.

As far as i know, sigs are at max. 4AU around planets.

Sigs only spawn within a 4au radius around planets.

the only thing you could look for beyond the system is a ship hidden in a safe spot but why anyone would is nuts in hi sec but you never know.

Sigs are all within 4AU of a celestial. I am not certain but i think that also includes gates that are out on thier own.

Well... not quite. Wormholes can appear up to ~5.5 AU out. But at that point you know for sure you have a wormhole.

You need to scan 8au around all planets in all directions, nowhere else.

(and yes, it's 8au, not 4au...)

4 AU for profession sites. 8 AU for wormholes (though I personally have yet to see a wh beyond about 6 AU).

Well rule of thumb is most sigs spawn within 4 AU of a planet, but occasionally they can be a little futher, especially in small systems. scan 8 AU radius around each and you won't miss much.

I did how ever one time scan down a sig way outside and above the ring of the last planet. It was when I was new at exploring, and if memory serves was in a small system only about 20AU across. The sig was also a K162 wormhole so not actually spawned in that system but an exit from a W-space system. Don't know if that makes a difference. Perhaps an experienced WH player can comment on whether exits often spawn on the outer edges of the destination system.

I have not found a sig outside since, but have not really looked.

I have frequently found sites several AU above or below the flat grid your probes spawn on, so always set at least one probe above and below if you don't want to miss anything.

Sometime ago CCP reduced the maximum space of any system to be 20 AU from the outermost planet (to remove ridiculously deeeeep safespots). So if you are looking for ships then you have to cover that area.

For sites, its 8AU around planets.

4au for anything other than WHs.

WHs can spawn out as far as 8au from celestials AFAIK.

I remember reading this post when I was recreationally scanning down drones in incursion systems. If you pursue this endeavor, incursion sites will spawn outside the normal spawn locations for cosmic sites. These are good spots to bookmark and use for offgrid boosters.

So if you're looking to scan down those boosters to test their tank or if you like to scoop drones, you'll need freescan all usable space.

Back to scooping drones. :)
