We Americans value freedom of speech in the extreme compared to many cultures and know it is perplexing to some. You will not be sent to jail or be fined for offending people and the expression of ideas is central to the American identity. I watched enough of the video in question that spurred this killing to understand it was a pointless piece of misguided trash. However, we as Americans would not suffer to see it suppressed to avoid offense or even to save the lives of our own at home or abroad. There is a price for holding the line on ideas and the bill for freedoms never seems to be paid in full. VR's/Sean Smith's death is a consequence of our imperative to live by these ideals. Given that he died in direct service to our country only makes clearer that his death was a sacrifice to these ideals.

I am known to speak and write plainly of unpopular ideals and uncomfortable truths. As I do so I will forever connect VR's life and death with my ability to do so. We must remember what we have lost to be who and what we are lest we be shamed as spoiled unworthy children.

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. --Thomas Jefferson

I never knew him.... this is a tragic end to a person who actually risked his life helping others ...

May his soul be at peace .... Cry

CCP should put a monument to those who died fighting for a cause in RL ... prolly in JITA so that he is never forgotten by the new players and the old ....

The cold hard fact remains this: He died doing what he loved. He had the choice of not putting himself in the position he was in, but he chose that life. Weeping over his death, or claiming it was a loss, dishonors Vile Rat. Why not act instead?

You really want to honor him?

Take out the ideals that killed them. Fight oppression and promote personal freedom in the real world. Start using your diplomatic skills and resources to affect change in the real world instead of wasting energy. Do what he did, and go forth into the world even if you risk it all, and try to make it a better place.

That's so ****** up, to be talking to a dude one minute, and he's gone the next.

I knew the name Vile Rat, from CSM6. Didn't know much of him. Eventually I would have learned more of him as I worked my way through EVE's history.

My sympathies to all the dude's over at GSF who talked with Vile Rat daily and often. I'm sure your Jabber isn't going to be the same for any of you.

Religion. **** it. This is always the end result.

I didn't know him. I couldn't have known him, personally with where I am currently at in the game.

But I've read up on the game, the history, the politics, the wars. And I've caught the name several times involved with the in-game aspect of EVE. I've also seen some of his forum posts, and heard many, many things through the grapevine. Even though I didn't know him, he had my respect. This doesn't change the respect I held for the man behind the toon.

To GSF, his friends, his work-buddies, and his family: My deepest condolences to all of you. I can't even imagine what this is like for any of you to lose someone so fascinating from an in-game perspective and, from what I understand, down-to-earth and friendly from a RL perspective

The Sandbox won't feel the same without Vile Rat's shovel moving through it, both in game and with his efforts elsewhere.

Rest in Peace, Vile Rat. May your spaceships always fly safe wherever you opted to go.

I don't really 'meh...' about anyone dying tbh.
