Tonight it does not matter from what part of EvE you come. We have lost a proud and brave man - who shall be missed and mourned.

To his friends, family and colleagues, to the EvE members who mourn his passing, I will say a prayer for all of you tonight.

Be well and fly safe.

To most of us, war seems like a distant thing.

We see reports of our troops on the front lines, interviews and news broadcasts from distant countries. We see the aftermath of gunfights, politically and religiously motivated riots and violence that stain the streets red.

We see images and videos of terrorist atrocities, made even more vivid by today's free flow of information across the internet via a million social networking and news outlets, and we see the caskets of those who give their lives to maintain our safety and protect our liberties and freedoms, be they civilian or military, come home repatriated and draped in the colours of our nations.

But for so many people these things are distant. They're something that's only viewed pixel by pixel, frame by frame, byte by byte as they're streamed across the internet to displayed in front of us in the safety of our home or office. It's a disconnected window into a world that shows the worst of human nature.

As a generation, we've become desensitised by these images that are beamed across the globe to us every day, but it still hits hard and fast when something like this kicks down the door to your life and forces itself inside.

Words of condolence never do enough to assuage the pain that comes from cruel and tragic events like this, but I have a few regardless :

To the Goons :

You're a pack of trolling bastards, you know this, and the rest of Eve knows this. However you've brought your own wonderful flavour of humour and madness to New Eden over the years, and have become a core part of such a vibrant community. Every one of you has my deepest condolences. As CEO of a corporation who's also lost people in the past due to unforeseen and tragic circumstances, myself and everyone who's ever worn our colours know the pain you're feeling. Every one of you has my deepest and most sincere sympathy.

To Vile Rat's Family & Friends both in and out of game :

I didn't know him well personally, my interaction with him in Eve was minimal. To me, he was always a well respected friend of a friend, but he served as a rock solid member of CSM6 with the best intentions of the playerbase at the forefront of his mind. It's terrible to hear of a loss like this, and I can't possibly begin to understand how you all must be feeling. You have my deepest condolences.

Finally, the people who're trolling this thread are a disgrace, and I'm glad you're having your asses handed to you by CCL.

I talked about the worst in human nature, and those of you who're behaving in a derogatory manner here are the personification of that. If you had any sense of self worth, you'd be ashamed of yourselves.

To Vile Rat, Rest In Peace. I don't think there's any doubt that you touched a lot of people's lives and left a legacy that will be remembered.

Fly safe.

A serial goodposter, a great CSM representative, a phenomenal diplomat, and a cool duder.

You will be missed all around.

What a terrible fate. I didn't know him at all and i'm completely indifferent about goons and their politics. I completely respect the man for working such a dangerous job.

Quote from a friend:

" sorting out politics with extremist groups should have been easy for him compared to handling diplomacy for the goons"

RIP Vile Rat.

Thank you for your service IRL and to EVE, honored statesman in both.

Condolences to his comrades and family.

A terrible way to end the night. Losing an Eve player like this always feels like losing a family member.

I hope that VR's family is made aware of his contributions to this community, and the thousands of real lives he has influenced in his years of play.

I never know what to say when violence affects us through communities we belong to, rather than an immediate personal effect. It seems trite to be affected by the death of someone whom I didn't really know when his family and friends have just received some of the worst news of their lives.

But that's the thing. We're a community. We're a team. All of us signed up to play this silly game of submarines and pixels and all of a sudden we find that we do care about each other. Beyond any shouting we may do when we disagree, what affects one of us, what affects a group within our community affects us all.

Anyway.

Vile Rat, wherever you are, I'm gonna miss seeing that stupid bald head of yours on the side of the threads. It was always a sign of goodposting to come.

This must happen.

I do not like the men on this spaceship. They are uncouth and fail to appreciate my better qualities. I have something of value to contribute to this mission if only they would realize it. - Bill Frug
