I think the fact that EVE is the most deserving of this award is less because of its quality, and more because of how utterly boring, derivative, and repetitive the rest of the genre is.

some games even do not deserve to be listed there. E.g world of tanks is as much of a mmo as counter strike

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

I can obviously only answer for myself but I play EVE because of its awesome players not because of anything CCP has done (other than bringing these people together in one place)

IMO many games beat EVE when it comes to graphics, content, documentation, game mechanics, stability, customer support, ... and whatever other metric you may choose to measure CCP's work by.

The only reason EVE feels like a tolerable game to me is because of all the player-supplied applications, guides, websites, communities, .... I have come to rely upon.

I guess you could argue that a reasonably polished game would never have generated such a level of creativity from its community and that the "learning cliff" is an integral part of keeping the EVE community enjoyable (by driving off certain kinds of players) but that is an accidental success by CCP at best.
"Let's create a bad game and hope that our players come up with 3rd party tools to fix its most glaring failings" is probably not what the EVE developers had in mind.

There's probably a reason why EVE has this intriguing tendency to win “best community” whenever it's being entered into MMO competitions…
