New player and already hooked after a few days so planning ahead to my first major mining ship. What is the most advantageous new ship after the rookie ship and what are the skills necessary to operate it ?? Don't want to purchase a ship for 150 million ISK to see a message alerting me i cant fly it . Lol

Fly a retriever, takes just a week to be able to fly.

I think
I don't know anything about mining at all.

As above, the Retriever. Look at the skills for it in game, it's relatively easy to skill for. Also look at the skills required to be able to use a modulated strip miner ii, and mining crystals. Then you're pretty much set.

When you right click the item in the market window, and click "Show Info", there's stuff filled in there telling you what you need to skill up... AFAIK, it works for all ships and modules in the game... at least in my version of EVE that's where the information is.

Show Info on the ship your thinking of buying.

there are 2 tabs that give the information your looking for

  • Requirements
  • Recommended (Certificates)

The requirements tab lists the minimum skill levels needed to sit in the ship.
The recommended tab lists certificates that improve the effectiveness of the ship when you sit in it.

You can then check on the certificate browser to see what skills are needed for each particular cert.

Some ships (Mostly Faction Hulls) don't have the "Recommended" tab, for those look at the Variants tab, look at the different ships built using the same hull, and if they list a Cert as Basic/Standard plan for an Improved level instead.

This is only the for the raw hull though. It doesn't list the requirements to fit the necessary modules, you need to work out the fittings and then check that you can use them too. I'll always remember skilling up for a Raven, buying it and then finding I had another 8 days of skilling just to be able to fit Cruise Missile Launchers.

My sugestion would be to find where you plan to mine, keep in mind you want this area to be .7 or lower. Find an NPC corp that has stations in as many regions and solar systems as you can, ie like Quafe, they are in all the main regions or another like it . Then get connections up to min of 3. Then get your race frig to 3, and go to the corp you chose and do missions until you can do level 3. Level 2 do security, level 3 find mining agent in .5 system.* only if you have ret* if not do sec level 3 until you do.

Then get to level 4's, and repeat. You want your rep for that corp at 6.67 to get no tax. *this as far as I have seen is for every station in that corp* The one I use is located in 56 solar systems. As you can imagine this gives you options as to where you can mine. As you grow in mining skills and ISK, you want to have your solo setup in several systems, for instance, I have a solo op setup in Cal, Mim, Ama, Gal space. Now while you are doing your missions, you are going to skill for barges. It goes fast!!

Once you get your barge's get a Ret for solo mining and a cov for fleet ops. Then get mining, Astrogeology to 5. Then get Refining to 5 Refine Effe to 3 and the various low level ore refine to 3. * a little more work needed for higher levels and not needed unless you are in real low sec or null sec* This will also allow you to use tech II stripers and tech I crystals. You now have 100% refine because of your mission running.

When you get Refine to 100%, turn back to ships and get barges to 5 and grab exhumers. Pretty much all there is to it, not a lot skills or time involved. Not many skills are 3X most are 1X and 2X. But you do want Exhumers asap!! Also, side note and not much added time is to get Freighter, if you are going to mine, you will need it asap.

Now the bad stuff, for some reason people hate miners, aftet this thread never ever admit you are a miner again!! Roll

Good luck, find a mining corp asap, this will help your income more than you think.

I'm a nerd, you can check my stats!! Skilling Int/Mem at 45 sp per minute is how I mack!     I'm like a lapdog, all bark no bite.

Very good post.

Only want to correct 1 thing.

People don't hate miners. People hate mining bots and miners who whine/complain they can't carebear (mine) completely free of risk.

If you're going for mining the Retriever is just an amazing mining vessel for new players. Later you will change into a Mackinaw(200mil) and maybe even a Hulk.

Hit me up in-game for some more info and help. Take care and goodluck.

for solo mining, retriever is really a winner i got 32M SP
and i still fly retriever its the most cost effective ship unless you only mine (but that would be boring honestly)

i got max skills and net at least 11M/h in highsec (its obviously not as good as the T2 counterpart or a covetor)
but for the price of about 50M that is quite cost effective (50M because its all T2 fitted)
and due to its huge cargohold (27.500m3 with max mining barge skill)

but for group mining i would say the covetor (hulk if youre loaded)
the covetor and hulk have a much better yield but small cargoholds so they need someone to transport all the ore (Orca)
