Today I put something in a trade window with someone and verified that he had placed 150,000,000.00 ISK on his end before I clicked accept (I don't fall for that age-old scam of placing fewer zeroes in the window). However upon accepting, I only received 150,000 ISK for the transaction. I'm not sure how he managed to do it. Did he change the amount in the window at the same time as I accepted?

Anyway, wanted you guys to be aware of this scam. Of course, people always say don't use the trade window, use contracts. But for some simple transactions, a contract shouldn't be needed. Maybe there should be a short accept timer to prevent what happened? Or maybe there is and it was something else?

Has anyone else seen this scam and know how it works?

I have been playing this game for about 10 years now (yes i'm an alt)

Seen this type of scam over and over, had a few mates using it too.

Firstly, Only the foolish or greedy get scammed, some basic rules. If it looks to good to be true... it will be, if it looks okay, it will be a scam. If it's not a scam... really it is.

Only EVER use contract system, though even this can be scammed.

I must disagree with those who say 'working as intended' and 'op's own fault'. This is a flawed game mechanic. Sure, the op should have known better...everyone knows not to use the trade window (well, most people), but like the old freeform contracts, this is just bad game design.

It's a scam that uses a flawed game mechanic that is compounded by lag in Jita. Had the exact same thing happen to me - I put in the item and stared at the amount while I hit accept. The amount never changed on my screen but apparently did somewhere in internet limbo. GM stated that it was a scam vs. exploit and they wouldn't do anything.

End of the day, it was my fault, I should have used contracts. With that said, it's kinda lame. I mean I know everyone wants to keep up the perception that Eve is a hard universe and scams abound but this is a scam that uses a ****** game design. I mean if I went into business with someone and then ripped them off, that's a scam. If I accept a contract for a Plex that has me paying an amount plus giving the Plex back, that's my fault for not reading. Using lag to manipulate a trade window after both parties accepted is pretty lame. The fact that CCP allows it is kinda stupid as well. I have no issues with scams but at least only support scams that involve work and not a poorly designed exchange system.
