I am a husband and a father. I like to think a good one. I like puppies and sunny days. I run a non-profit organization that helps alcoholics and drug addicts straighten out their lives. The group of people I play with are some of the brightest and best folks I've never met.

All because I chose to play the role of a villain in a role-playing game doesn't make me a terrible person IRL. The same goes for Smed, and CCP employees. People join guilds or corporations to play with people they enjoy hanging out with.

Except Eve isn't a role playing game. People lose real life money by losing ships. In effect, when you pop a ship you are in effect taking money from someone else.

What is it right now.... 500 mil per plex now. Thats $15 bucks for every two battleships you blow up (rough guess). Thats someones money you are burning through if you do it non-conensually.

Eve isn't a role playing game. Its a game of poker, blackjack, or whatever vegas game you wanna call it because you are taking money from other players and putting it in your own pocket.

That said, whether or not you believe Texas hold em makes you an evil player for taking the pot of everyone's money is another thing. I'm just saying Eve is not a role playing game. Its a game where money changes hands more like gambling games. Some people think that is evil. I'll let you decide.

okay, let me break this to you as nice as possible

everything is "real life" because there is (yet) no way that something that involves interaction with other humans can be outside "real life". every game, every role playing game, every poker game and your dog exists only within the frame of "real life" and is therefore part of "real life".

if you want to stipulate that a game is not a "role play game" because people loose money, then nothing can be a role play game since every game requires you to invest at least time that you can spend working, hence loosing money.

and even without that, if you play a pen and paper role-playing game you use pens and papers which cost money so ...

to make it really short: the definition of a role play game does not include or exclude the fact that you pay or loose money through it

also, and this might be more important, people act depending on their environment, they "act" all the time. just compare how somebody you know behaves different in following situations 1) family reunion, 2) driving, 3) drinking, 4) shopping, 5) standing in line to buy an IPhone, 6) trying to get somebody to date him, 7) playing FPS, 8) posting on the internet, 9) playing poker, 10) working in the office

you want to live in your little world, paying for your battleship and blame people if they are mean to you, thinking that they are just like that outside of playing a cut throat spacegame ? okay, if it makes you feel better Roll

Ok Eve isn't a role playing game because its like a game of poker. It's because no one is role playing.

People who play Vampire The Masquerade LARPing are role playing. People who play Dungeons and Dragons are role playing.

People who play Warhammer 40K aren't role playing. They are simply playing a game to beat their opponent. Maybe I'm talking over your head on this one, but the majority of the people who play Eve aren't pretending to be someone they are not. They are playing a game where ships are on the line. They aren't pretending to be an immortal poder but rather they are playing the game as if they were out to get as many ships as they can while destroying as many ships as they can. They aren't pretending to be a villian or a good guy.

Speaking of which... The majority of people who play MMO's don't role play. Role playing means you are pretending to be someone else. This person may be someone who is like you or maybe you role play someone who you are not.

But in Eve and most other MMO's players play themselves trying to win the game in the ruleset of whatever the game gives them. Be it levels, be it gold, be it isk.

I seriously doubt the CEO of sony sits around and says "I'm going to pretend I am person from the future and whoever I talk to in game I will pretend I am from the future and talk in future speak and have no understanding of the 20th century".

I hope you get my point. When you role play you play that character which no one does. Hence Eve online is not a role playing game so no one is playing roles except maybe a tiny minority of people who pretend they are from the future.

My point is that people play Eve as a game of poker, not role playing as they would if they were LARPing or pretending to be someoen they are not.

No one pretends to be a villian in a game of poker. You simply have the goal to take other people's chips. That is what Eve is. Not a role playing game.

Considering I came back to EVE after having been driven out of EQ2 by the machinations of Smedley and his chums I find it ironic that the president of the games company renowned for its draconian disregard of its playerbase plays a game where the players are treated as grown up and with respect while seeing those traits as a huge plus.

Having said that, maybe the fact that I have played EVE as long as I did EQ2 (6+ years) made me realise just how cruddy SOE did treat its players. It's just a shame Smedley seems oblivious to it.

No, you're not, unless that someone in question was breaking the EULA, in which case he deserves it.

EVE most certainly is an RPG.

Oh man, you don't get it do you?

See most players who play games view them as... well, games. We play them and have fun. Now there is some people who feel that the only way they can possibly have fun is if they are causing someone else to not have fun. Both players having fun at the same time boggles their mind. They can't wrap their head around it. So whatever measurement you want to toss out there, territory, moons, ships, battles; guess what? People are having fun. This war up north has been, by many accounts from both sides, a fun war. No one is calling for a time out or tossing in the towel because they want it to stop.

So you see, both parties enjoying the game is possible and has been happening a lot recently. Perhaps Lord Zim, you should play the game and have fun, losing ships or blowing them up. Do both.

I would also like to give a special shout out to a specific person who was recently upset about my remark in this thread. That was a huge stretch to take my post and say it was me accusing a certain someone that they are a murderer in real life. Straight

This is why you keep posting bitterly about us at every turn, because it's a game which you play for fun.

His AMA did a lot for him in my mind. As an old SWG/PS player, I had vowed to stay away from SOE forever. But it looks as if he learned a lesson from that debacle, and I have high hopes for PS2.
