What is General Discussion for?

Let's open this can of worms (actually just a beaten to death horse full of worms).

I was heartbroken to have my super duper awesome thread moved to a smaller subforum, and I noticed that others are being moved in such fashion. This is all well and good, as the threads are pushed to somewhere where people who actually care read them.

However, the variety of subforums is very broad. Just from a cursory look at the first page of GD, I see 18 threads that would belong in some subforum or other (Ships & Modules, Features & Ideas Discussion, Newbie Q&A seem to be especially relevant). I was half tempted to go and report all of them to make a point, but I think I'd rather ask you all:

What makes a thread belong in General Discussion rather than in another subforum?

My .02 ISK: GD is meant for "general" and thus "wider audience" discussion. The wider audience might not care about discussion of whether to put cap booster 400s or 800s in your injectors, but they may care about the possible/definite incoming tier 2 BC nerf. However, both of these topics would just be tossed under Ships & Modules. The general public may not care about Seleene's latest antics, but they may care about initiatives to get more involvement in the CSM from more of Eve's population... and yet both of these topics would be tossed into Jita Park.

The only threads in GD that seem to not have another place to be "sent" are content-proof abominations (the "get likes thread", "how ugly is the character above", etc), impotent whinging threads about petition response times or Eve being too hard, and crappy troll threads (heh).

Forumgoers, ISD, and CCP: would it not be better to be a bit more discerning about sending away threads you don't like or find comfortable to subforums? Can we make GD a place to have discussion with the general Eve public?

The real problem, I think, is that there are so many subforums that are graveyards with no traffic. Either a thread is in general discussion, one of a couple other active subforums, or it's effectively dead. What?

Solution: Combine inactive subforums! Smile

Hi Petrus,

I'm sorry if you've ever had the impression that a thread has been moved because "ISD don't like it".
Please feel free to use the report button or send a petition in if you think this is the case, but I hope you can trust me when I say, we do not practice that as policy and would view the any moderator who did so, very dimly.

General discussion is, generally as it would seem, here for discussing EVE things that can't simply be qualified by one of the child forums.

We know there is some perception that certain child forums are graveyards, but surely by the actions of us moving appropriate content to the right place, activity will be directed where it needs to be ?

Hope this helps you understand the ISD perspective.

General Discussion is for the ordinary EVE player to make foolish, factually incorrect, poorly reasoned posts, which certain august persons such as myself, Akita and Tippia can then amuse ourselves with.

And the life cycle of the forum continues in it's natural majesty.

No way, that's ass about face! People don't go to sub-forums because you move stuff there! Who the f thought that up?

People coming to forums don't want to have mess around looking in a dozen different places for all that interests them. By moving threads, all your doing is 'spreading out' the information, making people work to get to everything they need.

People go to sub-forums, because that is the most likely place they will find the information they need. I would put money that a single visit to the Eve Forums, is followed by a visit to a single sub-forum, and then they leave.

There should be half a dozen sub forums at most:

General, Ships, Market, Politics, Support, Announcements.

Job done. Everything you need, plus some cross pollination; people in ships will see interesting industrial fits, as well as PvE and PvP fits... thus exposing different types of players to their commrades, etc...

Eve is about the journey.  If you are so focused on making money, that you insist on having the tools to make it be made as autonomous and easy as possible, then you are never going to have as much fun as I will.

Dear James 315 alt - sorry your thread was moved to the sub-forum designed for CSM discussion. No brainer there sparky.
