How to start PVP in EVE

I want to start to PVP. The great PVP is what initially attracted me to this game. despite the age of my toon i have not been "playing" for very long at all, simply training. I know next to nothing about how to start fighting, like what ships and modules to buy, where to go and who to join for starting out. I eventually want to fly solo or in small gangs, and i'm not really interested in the politics or huge baby-eating alliances in nullsec. i simply want to blow up spaceships with spaceships. can i hear some advice on how to start out in PVP, then how to work my way up?

The best advice is to find a group of players to fly with and teach you. Do your research, check out killboards, recruiting forums, etc.

Another great way to learn PVP is to watch videos and read blogs. It's not the real thing, but it gives you some vicarious experience to draw upon when you're actually flying around in Tranquility.

join FW.

i also joined EVE because of the PvP and someone told me to join FW.

i didn't know anything about FW or EVE PvP at all when i joined.

someone mailed me (in game) some sites to look at explaining overviews, d-scan, rifter drifter guide (which is good to read even if you don't start out with rifter), and some basic FW things such as complexes and how they work etc.

if you decide to join FW send me an in-game mail and i'll forward you the literature that was given to me.

and feel free to ask me anything in game via mail about FW if you join.

you can join either Gallente, Minmatar, Caldari, or Amarr FW if you decide to go the FW route.

Minmatar hold nearly every system and "good" pvp is extremely scarce.

Caldari/Gallente is a huge warzone and you can find "good" pvp fairly often, but sometimes you have to travel quite a bit.

Amarr is the underdog and holds the least amount of systems and has the fewest pilots, but there are many targets (harder to fly solo because of the Minmatar tactics).

edit:
Also, Amarr is a bit more of a challenge because Lost Obsession (a former Amarr militia alliance) has decided that fighting the Minmatar was too difficult so they left militia and almost exclusively attack the few Amarr militia members that are still around.

edit2:
they could have left militia and attacked Minmatar or joined another faction in FW, but that's too much of a challenge

This is good advice. I spent time in RvB and enjoyed it immensely. There is no better way to learn PvP than going out over and over again to fight. That and since they have ship replacement options while mainly flying t1 ships you can continue to operate on lower amounts of income. Most importantly you will probably have fun.

Almost forgot....

Drat! You figured out our master plan to kill everything as opposed to just Minnies! :)

1. Fit a ton of frigates (merlin are win) or cheap Cruisers (Rupture is win)
2. RvB or FW
3. Agony Unleashed (PvP school, assuming they still are).

In a nutshell..................

You can read all you like....and I did.... but it all goes out the window in the first few engagements as you forget to turn the web and/or scram on, only turn on gun on, realise that your transversal is low, don't notice that they have capped you out......... and various other things that happen shortly before you die............. however, its all fun :)

In an effort to serve the EvE community in general, and to get more pilots into the PVP side of things specifically (can it be helped that this ultimately provides more targets for all of us?) Agony pilots volunteer their time to instruction and roams.

Agony does have an upcoming class. Informaiton about registration here: PVP-University class.

1. Buy 20 Rifters, t1-fit.
2. Give zero fucks
3. Lose all of them
4. Move on to a more expensive(ly fit) ship once you feel like you know what you're doing. Be sure that you can afford to lose it several times, still.

Master each ship individually. Fly nothing but that ship for a while; learn it inside and out. You will learn the general principles of PvP over time by doing this.

Same as the OP I've decided to jump in at the deep(er) end and do some pvp. Been in the save zone of high sec pve for too long. Had some fun roams in low sec today and realised that gate campers aren't all they're cracked up to be. Hopefully I'll get lots of first-hand experience and will no doubt get podded a few times before things start to click. But who cares.

1 word: undock.

Personally, my first experience with pvp in eve was literally undock, shoot someone, die to concord. I don't think I realized until 2 weeks later what actually happened.

Depending on what your style of playing is I like to propose you this options:

  1. If you prefer a "safe" and "well specified" environment then go for Red vs. Blue.
  2. If you want it less "safe" but want some help in learning the ropes then join a Faction Warefare corp like ours.
  3. If you really prefer the "I want to do it all myself" style then just join Faction Warefare as individual. You will then need to do everything yourself and be the lone wolf, but for some people this is the best way to learn. But it will be really hardcore and you will need a lot of frustration tolerance.

There's excellent advice in this thread so far (on EVE Forums - who knew that was possible!!!)

Read about it, then do it. You will die a lot at first.....keep going.

Both RvB and FW are excellent places to be as you learn...and many stay longer.

Figure out the type of PvP you want (sounds like you are already on track for that), and go looking for corps/alliances that do those things and are willing to help youl continue your learning process.

Above all, have fun.

Another great way to learn the ropes (which I haven't read so far) is to be a tackler/interceptor/scout. It basically means fitting up a fast ship with a warp disruptor or scrambler and a stasis webifier, to hold targets down for small to medium sized gangs (the bigger the fleet, the more comms discipline needed, the more it's about numbers and the less you'll be needed as a solo tackler, so the less you will learn)

Many many great FC's and 1337 pvp'ers have started out as tacklers. It's the most basic, noobfriendly role you can have and they are always welcome in any fleet.

Another important thing is to find a few ships you personally enjoy flying and have a good success rate with. A lot of people will swear certain ships are OP or UP, but there are pilots out there who fly unorthodox ships or swear by certain fittings. Point is, you won't have fun if you're flying a ship you don't like. Find your style and run with it.

A look at my killboard will tell you everything you need to know about the level of expertise and martial prowess I have at my command. Please give my advice all the respect that my reputation demands.

If you want to PVP like me, here are the critical steps to follow.

1) Be terrified of losing. If you lose your first PVP fight everyone will remember your failure for all time. You have to win the first time or you might as well just quit.

2) Don't join a corp that knows what it's doing. A true PVP warrior (who has honor, like the ancient Samurai of China) is a lone wolf cursed with the fact that his only skill is the waging of war. He learned his trade at his father's knee. This trade is the slaying of men. Or internet space ships at least.

3) Don't ever ask for help. To reveal ignorance is to reveal weakness. I guess it's OK to ask your father for help, though, because of honor and family or whatever it was I was saying up there in 2.

4) Money = Fun. The more money you have, the more fun you are having. That is why EVE is mostly a game of peaceful traders, jolly merchants, and cheerfully humming miners. PVP tends to lose money in the form of lost ships and CCP's hefty PVP tariffs. It is impossible to play PVP without also having enormous resources to draw from and at least 3 alts doing mining, trading, or mission running. PVP isn't fun and is only reserved for the hardcore warriors and soft, bored merchant dilettantes.

5) Make a difference. Your amazing PVP skills can save lives. If you declare your intent to eradicate piracy and griefers, the impoverished masses will rise up to join you. You will be a hero and learn what it means to finally be someone who matters. I would advise cleaning up your house or room because there will be many attractive women (or perhaps men) that will want to "get to know you" if you know what I mean. And if you don't, I mean...like...maybe hugging? I have no idea.

I think that covers the basics. As you advance through the ranks, you'll learn the importance of meditation, how to focus you ship's Chi, and other important battle skills you will need to fight the devilishly hard waves of NPCs and the occasional other human being. Fight well, brave warrior, for YOU are our future.

Or, you know, you could follow some good advice.

I'd recommend an Agony Unleashed PvP-Basics class. By the time you finish that you'll know if PvP is for you.

They have a class signup tomorrow as it happens :
