trade window scam

Today I put something in a trade window with someone and verified that he had placed 150,000,000.00 ISK on his end before I clicked accept (I don't fall for that age-old scam of placing fewer zeroes in the window). However upon accepting, I only received 150,000 ISK for the transaction. I'm not sure how he managed to do it. Did he change the amount in the window at the same time as I accepted?

Anyway, wanted you guys to be aware of this scam. Of course, people always say don't use the trade window, use contracts. But for some simple transactions, a contract shouldn't be needed. Maybe there should be a short accept timer to prevent what happened? Or maybe there is and it was something else?

Has anyone else seen this scam and know how it works?

I dunno... 150m and 150k don't look too similar, I would strongly recommend you make an appointment with an optometrist.

The point I'm making is that the trade window did say 150,000,000.00 quite clearly. If I thought there was any reasonable chance that I misread it, I wouldn't be posting this here.

All that happened is they typed 150m and then quickly replaced it with 150k before clicking accept, and you didn't notice. There's no way to change once the green box is checked.

You should NEVER trade with someone who is not your own alt or someone you know and trust very much through the trade window. Eat the 10k ISK cost of a contract and save yourself a lot of grief.

There still should be a small delay. If he did change it right before I hit accept, it was a fraction of a second before.

So it does happen a lot. More evidence that there should be an accept delay.

A good example is in the game Diablo II: when you alter the items on your side of the trade window, or the other person alters their side, the accept buttons are unclicked and cannot be clicked again for several seconds. The timer is too long in Diablo II however, I would suggest 1-2 seconds.

I don't do Trades.

I create a personal WTB contract for the person that want to trade. Normally when you ask them to create a contract they have 0 isk. When you create a contract they end convo.

Never never never NEVER use trade with a person you don't know and completely trust. This is one of the oldest scams around. There is absolutely no valid excuse to not use a contract. None. If someone says they can't or don't want to use a contract, just walk away because it's probably a scam.

^^ What the above poster said.

OP, you are a moron. Anyone playing eve for more than a week should know that by now. Or anyone who has ever visited jita should know trade window scamming is one of the oldest scams around.

Have you ever noticed how many people are selling their stuff cheap if you open trade with them in Jita 4-4?

Do not expect CCP to change legitimate game mechanics for your stupidity.

I actually had a trade window transaction that wasn't a scam recently. A guy was selling PLEX and didn't want to play Jita market games, so he was saying in local that he wanted to sell them for 5 mil under market value. He was legit and he didn't have to pay the sales tax.

Of course, I was the one putting the isk amount in and you can't exactly fake PLEX...still, I stared at it for two minutes trying to find the scam. He was cool about the wait though. +1, will do business with him again...now if only I could remember his name...

You are wrong and you learned something important today.

The lesson was worth 149.850.000,00 ISK which is not crippling, but just a bit humiliating.

Next time you'll use a contract unless you are stupid, so consider it money well spent, chalk it up to experience, and move on.

Also, free hint: coming into this particular subforum and explaining how you were scam will have two effects, and two only:

-They will laugh at you.
-They will encourage and compliment the scammer if they post in the thread.

Hey dude, hard luck man. Ignore the assholes in this thread who have no lives and forget that people make mistakes in life, it's a shame that they will one day realise that their entire lives are a mistake, whilst you only made a small one that everyone makes at some point.

In future mate, don't use the chat window because it's simply a tool for scammers. Yes I know it's a trade window, but CCP don't do things like other companies, unless it clearly states that it's secure.. it's not

It's only 150 million mate, you'll recover. Please don't use the trade window ever again, it's a design fault on the part of ccp

Ugh, this again. FFS, this is EXACTLY why people say to ALWAYS USE CONTRACTS!!!! They changed it at the last second, you deserve the loss you incurred, let that be a lesson to you! As you're clearly too dense to have heeded the warnings that you, yourself admitted you received, you should be further fined the sum of 100m isk to each poster who's had to read your post & further educate you on things already taught to you.

Call it a tutoring fee if you will....

Now, kindly go back to the kiddie pool & put on your floaties until you've recouped your loss & try again, but with more sense...

It's a hard knock life & a dog eat dog world in EVE. the raw fact is that if people don't flame people when they do these types of things, they never learn & never remember. Case in point being this very thread... OP was warned previously and decided not to listen. They have paid for it and now since being called out on it they will not forget. Lesson is now tattooed into their brain....

I once mistook 1500000 with 150000000, trouble is at a certain age, if you try and concentrate too hard on how many zero's there are, your eyes tend to start going shakey and suddenly everything is blurry, doubling the amount of zero's there actually are!! In fact they are going blurry just writing this....
