Is there a guide available to help in learning how to identify what modules a ship is fitted with just by looking at it when engaging in combat? I had the fortune of flying with some superb pvp pilots for a while and being a casual pvper (meaning i'm a "bad" and lose ships left and right) I was amazed at how they could see how the hostiles were fitted without relying on scanners.

I was too embarrassed to ask how they did this as it seemed like second nature to them and they did it so quickly. I felt like a moron. I realize that was foolish of me now. I'm assuming that they simply looked at the ships and saw from the ship models, what types of guns were fitted on the turrets and depending on the sort of aura or lack thereof were able to figure out whether the ship was armor or shield tanked, afterburner or mwd fitted etc.

How do you learn how to do this rapidly? Simply practice and memorize all of the different model images until it comes effortlessly I assume. Hoping there's a guide out there to make this easier to accomplish. Or is there some other trick that I'm unaware of?

Most tank type mods have distinct effects on the ships hull when turned on.

All guns have distinct models.

Most activated sensor type modules have distinguishable effects.

Most ships have "standard" fits that most pilots do not deviate from very much.

All of this can be learned through experimenting (fit modules, undock, turn them on, gawk at ship) or through reading up on every ship, it's slot layouts and bonuses and typical fittings.

There is no trick, just vast amounts of knowledge you haven't acquired yet.

I don't judge people by their race, religion, color, size, age, gender, or ethnicity. I judge them by their grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, clarity of expression, and logical consistency.

Aside from zooming in on the other player's ship with "look at", there is no trick, just lots of experience seeing the different effects and weapon models. Smile

Thanks - well I guess I just need to put in the time to memorize these graphical effects and images. Definitely gives you the edge to know what you're up against with just a quick look at your opponent.

If you want to visually identify turrets, this image is still floating around: http://i.imgur.com/c08RJ.jpg

Also, when going through them and looking at their models in game, the T2 versions of a turret often have different coloring schemes for the "lights" on the models.

Thanks Evei - quite helpful and much better than wading through the unzipped renders directory to find all these.

If you enable Advanced Camera Controls, you can do a bunch of cool stuff. You can use the camera controls to center on your target (Set As Parent), instead of yourself. This way you can pan around it, and get a closer look. You can even zoom in and out to identify turrets visually. Try this when ratting, and when you are sure you can easily beat the rat:

> Enable Advanced Camera Controls.
> Right click on a target and pick Set As Interest.
> Zoom to a pleasant level.
> Activate your mods.
> Press Ctrl+F9 to hide the UI.
> Enjoy the lightshow.

Good PVP'ers check the killboards of their opponents to identify common fleet Doctrines.

If your kinetic ammo doesn't do as much damage as it should he's probably tanked for kinetic
