(Maybe someone can somehow get the word out to the roleplayers in the Intergalactic Summit forum. I'd be flayed if I posted this out of character request over there. Maybe someone could craft something in-character that links back to this thread. I sense that if anyone is concerned with recording New Eden history it would be roleplayers, and they would be my best bet of digging up old history.)

One of my favourite podcasts is The History of Rome (available on iTunes). It consists of 189 episodes tracing the history of the Roman Empire from its founding to the demise of the Western Roman Empire in 476 CE. (I'm currently at about the 102nd episode.)

I love Roman history. If you're a history buff, I recommend checking the podcast out.

For sometime, though, I've toyed with the thought of doing something similar for EVE Online. To trace player history from the start of the game, until the present. EVE Online has a rich player history, and to research and safeguard it would be an interesting project. A project that I'm sure would interest a great many players.

My feelings towards such a project, is that the history would be kept in-character. No mention of the game, EVE Online, would be used. The podcast would use the in-game dating system. It would primarily focus on player events, but would weave in CCP written lore where appropriate (when that lore explains the introduction of new expansions and changes to game mechanics.) The first few podcasts would likely focus strictly on the founding of New Eden alone, until the first capsuleers, from that point it would be player focused.

The problem, of course, is where to find this history? The EVE Online forums, via EVE Search, seem to only go back to about 2006. The EVE sub-reddit, I'm not sure how far that goes back, but I'm guessing it's only about as old as Test Alliance. The original EVE forums do not go back to the beginning. A daunting task, and likely one that is now impossible. History pre-2006 may be lost. I'm sure there are stories here and there that a few players could recount, but certainly not enough of them, or in enough detail, to fill in all of EVE Online's history pre-2006.

Before I give up completely on the project, I figured I'd post about it. Maybe, somewhere out there, is a dude that has been thinking the same thing, has been collecting the older history. Or maybe someone has archived one of the older websites or forums. Or maybe . . .

If there's anybody out there with a wealth of pre-2006 EVE Online history, I'd love to have a conversation with you.

from http://poeticstanziel.blogspot.ca/2012/09/the-history-of-new-eden-wiki.html

I've decided to go ahead with the project. Since several people on the last post pointed out that yes, Chribba's eve-search.com does go back to 2003, it might be possible to reconstruct the early history of EVE Online.

This is not a one-person project though.

With that in mind, I've created a pseudo-wiki over at Google Sites, The History of New Eden. Anybody that wants to assist in the compilation of New Eden's history may do so. Email me at poeticstanziel@gmail.com or evemail me at Poetic Stanziel, and I'll add you as a contributor (you need to give me your Google account username/gmail address, though.)

There's not much on the wiki yet, except a sample template for year articles (e.g., YC 105), and a rough-sketch of the sitemap layout. These things are not set-in stone, and anyone who has a better idea of laying out the sitemap is welcome to suggest those alterations. I just figure it's important to at least set-out some form of organization for the project before starting.

Everything added to the wiki should be referenced with a link to the original source. Since all of our sources will be (or should be) coming from the internet, that should be simple enough. If we find conflicting information, that is important as well. Historical references do not always agree. Where possible, two (or more) sides to every story should be presented.

For the contributors to discuss topics, edits and sources, we can just use the commenting system. These comments are available to regular viewers, so adds a level of transparency to the project. (I'm also opening the revision history to all viewers for the same reason.)

I'm not quite sure how to handle references, but we'll figure that out. I was hoping there'd be some sort of WYSIWYG editing tool for them, but there does not seem to be any. (Which is why I refer to Google Sites as a pseudo-wiki above.)

Now concerning the podcasts. I don't expect we'll get one out for the first few months of this project. I don't care if we agree on one person to do them all, or if we rotate responsibilities for recording (although, we do need some quality control, and a single person to do the final editing, and release to iTunes.) We'll figure out the podcasts as that time approaches. I have laid out a very tenative schedule for the first dozen or so episodes. The size of the show notes will determine episode count and subject matter.

I suspect the podcasts won't be purely a chronological retelling of New Eden's history. There'll be special episodes that break from that format to give background on very specific events, people, corporations and alliances. I would expect, at some point, an episode on the history of Goonswarm, the history of Test Alliance, the history of Against All Authorities. Special episodes on Alliance Tournaments. An episode, perhaps, on Chribba, coinciding with the removal of super-capital ships from empire space. That sort of thing. There are lots of interesting options here.

I'll stop yammering about all of this here. I'll see how much outside interest there is in the project, because as I mentioned above, this is certainly not a one-person project.
