Brainstorming some new EWAR modules.

I just thought a "bumping module" would be fun, a vacuum blast or something throwing your target and all ships near it out of alignment.

Maybe a Tractor beam in PVP too, having a weak pull making it harder to orbit in close range? Maybe forcing you to do some manual piloting?

Anyone else got some ideas for potentially fun, useful and creative EWAR modules?

you know ive been thinking of being able to use tractor beams to pull ships in since i started playing... think how deadly a properly tanked orca would be to a frigate with two smartbombs and a tractor beam... Twisted The Hug of DeathTwisted

Oh, Do go on... no seriously ive got nothing better to do then listen to all the petty arguments and feeble trolling attempts...

The sad thing is i'm not sure if i'm telling the truth.

The problem with any random ideas like this is that you need to think about how they would impact the game or they will just be ridiculous (at which point you might as well discuss the color of happy rainbows).

A bumping module would invalidate an existing mechanic, which makes that bad.

A tractor module would stack upon all existing secondary tackle and invalidate various kiting and sniping tactics.

Simply introducing them would be beyond stupid and discussing them just for the sake of discussion equally so. Take the time to think about the environment they're supposed to be put in and try to make room for them in that balance. If you want a tractor beam, combine the base idea with how you could consider balancing it.

Bumping is going to get interesting when we don't have collision spheres any more.
Hell, a bumping module might be what we'll need when they are gone.

And a tractor module won't automatically "invalidate various kiting and sniping tactics". Sure, an irresistible, fast tractor with a 249km optimal would. But not every implementation of a tractor module would have to have that effect.

Hmm.
A tractor might fit into a solution for the issue that armor tanks are having at the moment - inability to dictate range. Introducing a module that offers heavier ships range control that isn't just plain "flying faster" could be interesting.

Are you referring to the wrapping of spheres to models, or has it been said somewhere that bumping per effect is going to disappear?

The point was that you need to deconstruct the environment to come up with balancing factors.

The issues tied to tractoring of ships are multifold: overall grid-push, hold and bleed currently have quite an advantage over evasion and ellusion tactics: catching someone isn't difficult. Things like LR webs, points and bubbles are currently very strong. Stacking more ontop of that present an environmental problem you need to deal with.

Then you have modular balance issues, what a tractor would do TO those similar modules (in contrast to ontop of them or alongside them) and how you would balance the more powerful notion of creating negative distance over just limiting positive distance (pay extra note: there are no modules that completely stop a ship in EVE, and the stopping power of stacking multiple secondary tackle mods today is under heavy scrutiny, it's a delicate balance). Suggesting a tractor beam against that background is quite an eccentric suggestion, if you understand what i mean.

Counter to a tractor would either be another tractor (pulling towards friendlies), a web (stopping em), manual piloting, turning on the AB / MWD, using it as a spring board (getting extra speed by heading straight towards the enemy)...

The EVE community has a history of getting surprisingly creative (think 100mn HICs closing WH's).

Noctis with smartbombs will be the death of frigates.
