Is there, or should there be, a common etiquette for EVE?

I think as long as we keep the racist, sexist, phobic, etc.. talk to a minimum, (better if none), we'll be doing relatively well. Frankly, I don't even like to see people joking about it, and saying your part of that group and trashing your own means nothing against the offensive spew you're spilling.

Some things are just inherently inoffensive. Even if they are labeled as being anti-something, it's just hard to take the idea of them being offensive seriously; particularly when that group uses the expression freely amongst there own. Probably why in fact, but it doesn't make it okay for others to use it regardless.

Head swivels; attention gained.

How are we so offended by something which by rights shouldn't concern us as a member of another group?

I don't think it's about being a member of a group so much as being a member of a species. There is little difference between myself and the people who are being trashed, so why shouldn't I be concerned.

Special interest groups are another thing. Frankly, I'd rather not hear trash talked about them, but really I'm not particularly offended by it.

That doesn't include Women. As a person, I am inherently offended to the point of being quite a lot more angry than if it were directed at me, when I hear or see someone attacking a women or abusing here through language or physical means.

I'm not offended if someone says or indicates that they think a women is hot or attractive or whatever, or even that they have interest in her. Why would I be offended by Human nature?

Of course, if they're making a point of embarrassing, harrassing, or affecting that women negatively with their interest, that is another thing. Just because someone thinks it, or even admits it, doesn't mean it needs to reach the ears of the person subject to it or affect them in any way. More often, better if it doesn't.

Mutual attraction and appropriate indicators of that attraction in acceptable places by acceptable means are required. Anything else is offensive, disruptive, potentially hurtful, and inconsiderate.

Ethics.

Am I trying to control you, or am I being controlled?

Neither generally, but some influence of the latter is certainly probable with regard to how I came about my particular set of principles. That doesn't mean I to be controlled to maintain them, which indicates they are my own.

How does this translate to EVE?

By no more means than how I treat others within the game. I either respect a certain set of unwritten and written rules, indicate my expectation that others do the same around me, or let things slide despite my preference that they didn't occur because I can't expect others to behave as I do.

Mostly, it's not harmful here anyway. Might be harmful to them if they mispoke in the wrong circumstances in the real world. Particularly, it doesn't truly offend me because what I let slide is wihout malice and certainly not intended or capable of inflicting harm on anyone aside from some hurt feelings.

We all get hurt feelings; does that mean we should all stop communicating? Obviously not.

What gets me is hate. Anything capable of inflicting serious, grievous harm on another simply by the very nature of its existence. That shouldn't be, and I will try to stamp it out anywhere I find it with whatever means I have at my disposal, short of inflicting verbal or physical violence on someone.

This doesn't stop at special interest groups, ethnic groups, or recognized groups in general. It extends to all people, regardless of creed or class.

Of course, any group non-specific of those groups that chooses to be stupid, self-destructive, or blatantly ignorant with regards to so many things is unlikely to get any respect or defense of their actions from me. I'll stop short of calling you what you are in most cases, but that's about it generally.

I might say something if I somehow manage to come to care about you as an individual and a person, but that's probably not going to happen.

No, I don't think we have any particular sort of code of ethics in EVE or exclusive to EVE, to answer your question. I've seen a bit of everything here, and more of some things than I'd like.

There is. Much like in real life, actions have consequences in EVE. If you run your mouth in local, someone might take offense and wardec you. Or gank you.

Personally, I strive to be polite and respectful to people, because it inspires the same behaviour in them. I also help people who are obviously newbies, rather than mocking them. I am an ambassador for my corp and alliance, as well as my own industrial setup.
And not JUST because they're a market for my sales of miscellaneous parts.

Niceness costs you nothing, but lack of it could cost you everything. Don't give people a reason to scour the belts for your hulk, or scan down your pimp-fit mission boat.

You can't fart in the UK without telling the taxman so you play tax on it.

You only realise you life has been a waste of time, when you wake up dead.

Varies depending on the audience. There are things that should not be spoken when there are parents that game with speakers.

I've been playing some of those "moderated" games (their forum/chat actually) and it was almost impossible to talk and discuss. It turned very soon into a 'moderators spamming alerts and ban contest' instead of 'game forum and chat'. So many thread closed even before the first reply because 'they blatantly would have brought to flaming and trolling' or people warned and banned just because they quoted other people warned or banned. And so on.....

I'll never forget the hate I owe towards those moderators and that 'gaming company' treating mature players as perfect morons just because of a presumed 'offensive language' which was offensive towards some ipotethical 10 yo pristine kid who could have been interested in playing the game.

Don't ignore the fact that in the internet the line separating 'moderation' from 'stalinism' is very thin and very red.

The only social rule everybody seems to agree on is being nice to newbies. This is in contrast to other games, probably because in eve it's almost impossible to figure out everything by yourself

Ok all joking aside I will admit I was impressed by the reactions of the EVE-O forums when that person made attacks on CCP Punkturis.

Although there are times when we all act like fools, jerks and well EvE players, I can honestly say I was proud at that point to be a member of this community. Also I think Chribba would have happily crawled down the internet connection to teach that guy some manners.

Hey James315,

How's about this as etiquette?

Stop slandering and hating on players whose playstyle you disagree with.

And stop producing nazi-style propaganda on the internets.

Godwin's Law is difficult to manifest on EVE forums considering that the words Hitler and Nazi are censored.

I suppose he could have meant goon-style propaganda, but goon isn't censored so I assumed the other.

My god, this thread is full of internet badasses.

Eve is about the journey.  If you are so focused on making money, that you insist on having the tools to make it be made as autonomous and easy as possible, then you are never going to have as much fun as I will.
