Is there, or should there be, a common etiquette for EVE?

If you've been on the internet for awhile, you've probably heard of the term "netiquette". Forums, chatrooms, etc. have their own customs and codes of conduct. We know there are some standards in EVE, for example, rules against using in-game channels for racism. Some EVE organizations, such as GoonSwarm with its "cultural revolution", have sought to improve the atmosphere for female gamers by discouraging the use of sexist language. There are even some areas of space in which players agree not to use profanity in local.

What do you think? Is there an unspoken standard of behavior that most EVE players adhere to, or does it completely vary depending on where you are in the game? Do you think EVE players are more or less polite than those who play other games, such as FPSes? Are EVE players too uptight, or not courteous enough, in your experience?

I think the relevant laws in the United kingdom cover this adequately already.

Any spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors are because frankly, I don't care!!

Yes, do what ever you want, when you want to, to whoever you want to, and if that makes it suck to be the guy you did it to .... oh well.

I will say compared to Xbox live, discussion in Eve is almost civilized. However, I think if someone is offended by language, they probably shouldn't be playing a game like Eve.

In the past week I've met people who made me feel very welcomed and who have been a genuine help, and I've met people who made me feel like it was my first day in prison and anything I say or do, or don't do, is grounds for group ridicule or worse. I haven't been part of this community for very long but already I can tell that the EVE Community is a very diverse one, and just like real life the disposition of the people I've come in contact with varies. Tricky part is finding compatible people to hang out and grow with, as the game encourages some of the more negative aspects of human behavior such as subterfuge and derision.

With that said, should there be a common etiquette for EVE? It certainly would make for a more enjoyable experience, but you'd be hard pressed to enforce it.

It's not that Eve players are less likely to use profanity, it's that Eve players tend to be more educated/mature and thus prefer to use profanity when it makes an impact and/or point. Those who can't finish a sentence without lacing it with profanity tend to be on the other side of the bell curve.

If you want to learn about eve etiquette, I'd reccomend speaking to some alliance diplomats who are the few people that require manners from time to time.

“We could learn a lot from crayons; some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, while others bright, some have weird names, but they all have learned to live together in the same box.” - Special needs division of Fcon.

Wow, a decent topic from James, color me impressed.

In my opinion, it does vary greatly from one part of Eve to another. There is definitely not one strong overreaching code of netiquette in Eve yet, but smaller mores are developing (such as your example against racism and sexism.)

I would put Eve's general populace above the short term quick play competitive games (see: xbox live COD crowd) in politeness, but the underlying theme of thievery, backstabbing, and betrayal in this game brings it a step down from other less competative MMO's.

Sure, you can be polite and friendly to someone before you rip off the corps bank, but its still rude to do so. No amount of "its a cold, harsh game; I was supposed to steal from you" makes it any more polite to be a liar and a thief In the end as it was a choice to do so; the scorpion is still a douchebag.

But that's Eve. This game is full of clever bastards. I may like everyone more than the 12yr old twits on COD, but you're all still bastards. Blink

In any case, I do feel that we are going to see more of this develop as the game has taken more of a Real Life influence. The player/dev gatherings, real money influence, tons of out of game metagaming. All this leads to a more permanent society that you don't see in quick-play then over xbox live games. This more permanent society will leads to developed societal mores.
