Should I train for a carrier?

Hello all,
I'm at a juncture in my training at this time. I kind of want to train up for a carrier for knocking out anoms for quick isk. I don't plan on using said carrier for any fleet ops at least until I get a great cash flow and learn how to use said carrier. The question is: Is this a good route to take for taking down anoms quickly? I know there are some who use carriers to blitz anoms, but I am not sure if there is a better (and cheaper) ship for this purpose. Currently I'm using a Raven and can knock out anoms without much difficulty, but I'm looking to increase my speed of completing these. Suggestions?

A Carrier is something I picked at for a couple years. If you think you will want one eventually, then start on it. IMO, a Carrier is an ongoing train, and it is one of the ships that deserves great skilling to back it up. Lotsa lvl V skills.

As for farming in a slow turning 2 bil ship: I can't recommend that at all. You would rather lose 10 Ravens over 1 Carrier.

What would you suggest Raven? Other options I've considered would be like a Golem or something along those lines. I hear Tengus are great but I don't know how they stack up against a CNR or Golem. I've not been long back from a long hiatus and even before I wasn't a master at the game or anything. I'm interested in hearing some options.

I would recommend a faction BS. But just if you can afford to lose it.
Which one depends on the region you want to do anomalies.

The cheaper options are some HACs or Command Ships.

"Safe" place to do anomalies: Faction BS (maybe fighter assigned, just ask another ratter if he can assigen fighter to you from his alt)
"Unsafe" place to do anomalies: HAC

Also keep in mind that a carrier has just around 1000dps. Even a plain dominix can exceed that.

I would not recommend a carrier for your intended use, although having a carrier comes in very handy for your personal logistics.
And as Paine said, if you have no cap ship skills at all, it will take very long to fly it effectively and even break the 1000dps.

I think I may not train for a carrier at this time. I cannot really afford one, and there are so many other skills I need before I can fly one effectively. I think I'm gonna opt for smaller ships such as T3 cruiser or T3 BC. Those seem a little more down to earth to me at this point. I just finished Drone Interfacing V because I thought about going carrier, but at least it will help my drone dps so it isn't wasted.
In the short term though I may go for a CNR. My Raven dps is about 600. How much more dps can I get if I switch to a CNR?

I used to carrier rat in the drone regions, before the loot changes I would dual box with a noctis to scoop drone poo...

They are very effective, especially in the horde with the 4 bunkers in the middle that trigger the waves - nice thing in a carrier is your tank is so high I could fly in and deploy sentries, pop all 4 bunkers - this spawn all the waves and aggro the entire room. Then simply recall sentries, release fighters (Templars) and kill all the drone battleships....I fitted a faction EMP smartbomb which I would wipe out all the tackling frigs and close orbiting cruisers....ignore the rest, the BS is where the money is...warp in the noctis alt about half way through and start tractoring in all the poo...

However, I lived in a VERY quiet system and as such had time to do that, although I always kept aligned to a pos and watched local like a hawk - having alliance eyes on the pipes into your territory also gives great intel that can give you plenty of notice to get to safety.

Other suggestions are valid though, I ran them in a Loki before I had my carrier with no real problems, a lot slower though, tengu lacks drones and is dealing much lower damage with EM missiles, if you get webbed you are dead as several corp mates found to thier cost....the next best thing is a Nightmare or Paladin IMO, have seen them both used to great effect in drone anoms.

I use a Tengu a lot. But when I go to 0.0 I sometimes fly 20 - 60 jumps. So for me the Covert/Nullifier is what is important. DPS is secondary.
My Tengu only gets around 400 DPS. Not what you are looking for. CNR should get over twice that.
If I was in a 'Base' system somewhere I would probably go for a CNR over a Golem. CNR's are cheap right now. And this is 'IF' you want bling for what you do. When I did live in 0.0 I used PvP fit Tempests and Ravens a lot, modified with an active rep.

I have never done Drone plex/anoms. So I'm definitely not the expert on them.
I like Chakkarrs suggestion of the Paladin or Nightmare for the EM damage, and I know that Minmatar ships have great EM resists, so a Tempest or Varg might also work.

to the OP - post your skills on eveboard
there are probably a lot more still you should get before you train to loose that carrier ...

Jump Drive Calibration is the most important skill, in my opinion. Train it to at least 4, and seriously consider 5 later.

Your drone skills are abysmal, so are your logistics skills. Your core skills and tanking skills are similar. You are quite a ways off from fitting capital-sized modules.

Personally, looking at your skills, I wouldn't bother with capitals yet. Sure, you can train for the carrier to move your ships around, just don't take one into combat.

You should probably focus on getting Core Competency, as you don't even have Standard yet.

^^^Agreed

As for the spirit of the OP I always suggest players that live/want to live in nullsec aspire to get into a carrier/rorqual (which ever suites your fancy). The ability to move your own crap when going on deployments is amazing! Amazing for you, amazing for the guy that had to move your stuff before, and amazing for the amount of asprin money your corp/alliance logistics coordinator saves from getting headaches listening to you complain that your stuff hasn't been moved yet. Even if you cannot run hordes in it straight off there are perks to owning a carrier.

It also gives you drive to polish off all those support skills to 5, and that will always make you a better pilot.

My advice though is don't rat in it until you can field at least t2 heavies or sentries + fighters.

Edit: After a more close look at your eveboard, train core competency standard first. Seriously Advanced Weapon Upgrades is your friend

When you do get into a carrier, or any jump capable ship for that matter, make sure you have at least one other account active for a cyno alt.

NEVER trust anyone else to cyno for you, no matter how well you think you know them.

Get a rattlesnake.

When you get good with your rattlesnake you can jump up to carrier.

Hey everyone,
Thanks for the feedback. I've made a decision to train on my support skills such as tanking and the like. After seeing how other Character's skill sheets, my engineering skills admittedly suck. I'm gonna work on those and other support skills by using the certificate planner (thanks Tau for the idea). I need to work on flying the ships I got better than to think about "bigger is better". I guess my ignorance showed through on the carrier line of thinking. There are a lot of things I didn't realize about having one. And while +5% shields isn't a big deal on a frigate, it's a huge one on a carrier.
