Additionally I don't base my math on the level everybody else stops skilling to Cool

I've trained continously since March 2007. It so happens that I only have Marauders at skill level 4, but all I need to train is Maruders 4->5 and Torpedoes 0->5, then I'll be good to go. I already have the target painter skill(z) at level 4.

This also allows the Golem to reap some other benefits from torps, such as being far less susceptible to defender missiles, being able to use T2 torps (for MOAR DAMAGE!1one… or more range) without suffering from the penalties they usually impose, and having most enemies die within handy tractor-beam range so you can get some use of that bonus as well…

What's this? Is the Golem exempt from the drawbacks of T2 furry torps? Or what do you mean?

Painter bonus negates the Rage drawbacks (and since torps are unguided, high damage versions are Rage, not Fury).

Edit: if you're asking about the sig bloom, Rage does the same thing as Fury and the Golem is not exempt (except in as much as it already has a fat sig).

Thanks, that was what I was asking about.

It boils down to this:

Cruise Golem: Joke DPS + NPC defenders kill 25% of it
Torp Golem: Nice DPS + NPC defender "proof"

A Golem using Rage torps doesn't kill any faster than CN torps except against structures and maybe a couple of NPC battleships. Plus it has a shorter range than T1/Faction torps.

So why is a cruise Golem silly? And how silly is it, on a scale from 0 to 10?

It works. If your CM skills are significantly better than your torp skills, by all means fly a CM Golem (until your torp and TP skills are where they should be).

That said, a CM Golem is worse than a torp Golem because:

1. Defender missiles are bad. Since the Golem gets a damage bonus instead of a ROF bonus like the Raven, rats that use defender missiles really cut into your applied DPS.
2. Several of the Golems bonuses are fairly useless for CMs (TP bonus, explosion velocity bonus, missile velocity bonus).
3. Only 2 rig slots means no three rigor rigs.
4. Significantly more (paper and applied) DPS with torps.
