I kind of imagine that CCP will make WiS F2P, and leave the space flight to subscriptions built around the present concept of "pilot's license".

That is, you can buy a PLEX/license or subscribe for the monthly license, and this means you can fly ships, but the WiS portion of the game means you play for free but if you don't pay for that license, you don't fly.

You can still log in and walk around and stare at the walls, but looking at how "barbie-ish" the WiS thing is, there could be a cash shop potential there. If there is ever more content for WiS, like being able to fight, deal in contraband, etc, where one can actually play this game in some manner seperate from FiS, then it could work.

This would rely on the FiS part of the game not having to be meshed with, or depend on, the WiS. So someone with only a few bucks can F2P the WiS part and possibly never fly a ship if they have other things to do, and someone who wants no part of WiS can continue to PLEX or sub and stay in ships, having nothing to do with "station matters". It would be the best of both worlds, making participation in them optional for either side.

And if there is ever melee in stations, I'll be happy to spend a few bucks for some brass knuckles.

i agree with this, if CCP followed this idea it would lure in more users and eventually more money for the company. there are mmos out there like dofus.com where the first 25 levels are free, you can roam everywhere and talk to anyone but you can't kill any mob higher than level 25... it's great for a demo and in eve or world of darkness this kind of social addon to the game could bring in large crowds. why play second life when you can be in space?

although i believe if WiS ever gets back on its feet it will need a mini game... just chatting can already be done by docking in stations. i dunno

I'm really glad that SWTOR becomes F2P. Now I can finally play it. I was in the Beta but I haven't bought it because I've known that it's not worth it.

F2P is a great way to play some MMOs you couldn't play otherwise because of time and money.

I'm also waiting for the time when WoW turns F2P, or at least I wish they would make a classic server with a reduced subscription fee (like 5€/Month) and all the settings and everything like classic WoW without all the crappy addons that made the game to the ****** thing it is today.

Do you know what's really dumbing down eve? Graphics! If you really want a hardcoregame with a learning curve that even beats eve: Try bay12games.com/dwarves

im actually excitied for TOR to be free to play even though i heard it was a terrbile MMO which brings me to another point
WHY ON EARTH CANCEL SWG? it was a great game. sure it had faults sure SOE screwed it over like hell but it was still a great quality game. now onto F2P well there are pros and there are cons. it all depends on the game and weather it can run a F2p model or not. i HIGHLY doubt EVE will ever go F2p i just enjoy it to damn much xD. Be that as it may the F2p Model is a trend that alot of Game companies are adopting. Coupled with MicroTransactions make a F2p Game everybody will like and it will eventually pay for itself.

SWG got shut down because of LucasArts. Companies need a license to use the Star Wars IP and that license didn't get extended or got revoked or w/e for SWG, basically LucasArts only wants one SW MMO around at a time, thus SWG had to go for the new thing. Trust me, SOE would've been happy to keep SWG alive for as long as enough people were stupid enough to pay for the hosting costs for a game they didn't put any more effort into (which is the same for most if not all SOE MMOs, they build something, then neglect it and let it wither away until people catch up to it and finally give up on the game).

Also SWToR F2P is more like "pay for every itty little bit", like some other "F2P" MMOs. You get to buy all the content that subscribers get for "free" and usually you´ll have paid way more in the end, see LotRO for example. They're just shareware MMOs really, not true F2P. Maybe those dumb journalists need to learn the difference, but heh, guess who pays them...

For me going-F2P spells "failing game" and/or "greed" as those "microtransactions" are just a way to rip people off more for less content and maybe sucker some extra people into paying for stuff that's not really worth it. Oddly enough, both are things I inherently associate with the likes of EA and SOE ("failing games" and "greed", that is), must be coincidence...
