I am very new to eve, and for money I am mission running. How do the more older and wiser gents select an agent? What criteria distinguishes some agents from others? Finally how do I know I am ready to more out into lowsec.? Thanks in advance.

Where the agent is, what corp he represents, what shiney toys are offered in the LP store, how far away is the nearest minor/major trade hub, is the agent at a mission hub.

Your ready for Lowsec when your ready to watch your ship explode without complaining about it exploding.

It really doesn't matter much after the great agent equalization patch a while back. What counts is:

0) Agent level

1) What security system the agent is in. (Lower is better for isk, but only marginally.)

2) How close to LS/NS you are. If you are close to LS you'll get missions there on occasion.

3) What is in the LP store for the agent.

4) Where the agent is. Closer to a trade hub is nice to buy and sell, but it means higher pop which means more gankers, ninja looters, and the like.

I check LP items I'm interested in at http://www.ellatha.com/eve/LP_Stores.asp to see how many different stores stock them. I then look for multiple agents for those corps that are as close together as possible. I'll then scout those agents to check the stores and the local market for a few days and scan the systems to get an idea of how busy the area is. This way I have multiple agents to run for so if I get a mission I don't like, one that will negatively impact faction standing for example, I have another agent I can go talk to. I also have jump clones in different regions so I can quickly and easily move from one faction to another when desired.

The worst thing you can do is only use one agent.

Also, take your time moving into level 4's, it's often more profitable to stick with 3's and complete several of them quickly and easily rather than struggle with a 4 for hours because you have low skills.
