Why does a deadspace small shield booster sell for so much?

I just had a Pithi A-Type Small Shield Booster drop in a complex in caldari high-sec. The tip says it's worth around around 300 million. If that is true, I'm gobsmacked - why does a little shield booster cost so much? I can't imagine even the wealthiest players putting that much bling on a frigate.

The small shield booster acts like a shield recharger and runs permanently on tengu's. works great, small cap use so it lets the tengu be cap stable with a 10mn afterburner.

this module is most popular with "jew-gu's". arguably the best PVE boat in the game.

The deadspace mod boosts much more than the t2, thus it is a great investment (it is almost required to have a deadspace sm. booster)for PVE tengus.

It's shield/cap efficiency is quite high. Further more pithi ones are almost twice as powerful as normal ones. Though I wouldn't put it on a pvp ship, I can see good uses for it in pve ships, especially when the fitting is tight.

And even more fundamentally, the fact that it works so well on PVE Tengus, and that they don't drop that commonly, means that there's massive demand for them, so it's a seller's market for that type of shield booster.

Guess that will buy you some BCUs?

By the by, it's not just Tengus. Nighthawks benefit just as much, as do Lokis and Sleipnirs. Some high end PvE battleships even use them, though honestly that practice has gone out of style of late.

Absolutely, this was just the stroke of luck I needed. I don't get much time to play because of RL so this will really help me get some upgrades.

It's because of the cap to boost ratio. Nothing else really.

Ehhh... Not really. If that were the case then you'd expect to see Gistii boosters (the cap efficient ones) outprice Pithi boosters (the less-efficient-but-holy-hell-how-much-does-it-boost? ones). The opposite is actually the case; Pithi smalls are about 60% more expensive. For obvious reasons, the trend reverses for XL boosters. Pithum mediums are similarly a bit more expensive then Gistum mediums. Gist takes over at large.

Ignoring every other factor such as slot usage, defensive recuirements (how much boost you need), fitting recuirements, which ships need what and so on you'd be kinda correct. But the reason Deadspace small and medium booosters are so expensive, is the cap-usage to boost ratio when comparing to T1, T2 and Faction boosters.

Comparing say a Medium Pithum to a Large Gist X-Type it provides something like 50% more boost per cap spent. Comparing a Pith A-type medium to a CN Faction or T2 and you get something like twice as much defense per point of cap spent.

Congratulations, you discovered his incredibly, incredibly obvious point that was basically directly stated.

It's more subtle than that. Pithum A-types provide 3.8 shield per cap and 76 shield per second. Gist C-type XLs provide 2.93 shield per cap and 131.25 shield per second. So no, we're not talking a 50% increase in cap efficiency; it's only a 29% increase. Which is substantial.

But yes, deadspace boosters do blow faction and T2 completely out of the water at small and medium sizes. I just wouldn't say it's the only relevant factor. If it were, the Gistum and Gistii A-types would be more popular (4.38 shield/cap and 4/47 shield/cap respectively) than Pithum and Pithi.

But meh. I'm thinking this argument is played out. We agree that deadspace boosters are massively efficient on shield/sec and shield/cap. We agree that there's nothing comparable to them, especially at small and medium sizes. And we agree this makes them very expensive and highly favored on carebear ships that need a constant source of boost for a trickle of cap usage. I just don't think cap efficiency is the only factor that makes them expensive (and I don't actually think you do either).

And It's silly really because a faction medium works just fine...
