4 years of Eve Online

I've been playing Eve for nearly 4 years now, and I'm at this stage when I look back on the amount of cash spent on this game and the amount of fun I got in return and how the game evolved since I started playing.

Here's the features that I consider well done and are the greatest new stuff CCP managed to introduce to my gaming experience in 4 years.

1. The waypoint displayed horizontaly instead of verticaly was probably the greatest UI idea ever made by CCP.
2. New asteroids, planets, nebulea graphics and ships shaders
3. Improved UI for probing
4. New ships
5. Browsing internet inside the game
6. New War declaration system

I can't think of anything else really. Incursions could have been in this list but it's PVE without a challenge since the gangs are generally quite big and I must admit I missed the incursion fun days when I was in 0.0. Also, i've never lived in wormholes, the exploration side of things interests me a little but living out of a POS is a major turn off. New ships are great, but it's like introducing a new gun in a shooter, it might be fun for a while, but the feeling is short lived. So, the amount of fun generated from this compilation of new creations by CCP is nearly 0.

I read most of the CSM Meeting minutes and i got the feeling priorities is on the stuff that affects a few people and won't generate any fun for the masses in the end. Also there's no point investing many months of dev on a small feature that will be used by a minority !

4 years is a long time, many games like Skyrim, Shogun Total war, Assassin's creed, Mass effect, GTA IV, [...] were proably made within a 4 years timeframe and the amount of content and fun is quite high. In my 4 years playing Eve, all the expansions put together never brought anything close to the amount of fun i'd get from a 60$ blockbuster game.

I got into Diablo 3 lately and when they announced patch 1.04 I was suprised to read the blizzard game designer refering to farming in a positive way. They are aware that farming is part of their game and they want to make it as fun as possible. In Eve, farming is a bad thing and they don't see it as something to encourage. That's a mistake because farming or grinding is at the core of all Eve activities. In my view, this should be the priority for the next expansion combined with this http://jestertrek.blogspot.ca/2012/07/thats-just-way-it-is.html.

The funny part is that many are in denial about this game and sooner or later the **** will hit the fan once again for CCP

1. Diablo 3 sucks. Citing it as support for anything that should be done in Eve is.. well.. bad.

2. If you feel that you get more fun from Shogun, Assassin's Creed or Mass Effect.. then maybe you should stick to single player games. Personally, I get far more entertainment and enjoyment from working with (and dealing with) others than just sitting there killing mindless NPCs that adhere to regular patterns. I do enjoy games like Skyrim, but I get far less long-term value from a game like that than a game like Eve.

I did and I even clicked on the broken blog. About the most I can see is that you are asking for more mindless grinding after listing things that you like and something about a grind game that deals in RL money trades.

1. Yeah maybe diablo 3 sucks in your opinion but they have over 10 years of experience in a game based on grinding and farming. Hannibal Barca was defeated by the romans, yet they learned from him

2. Fine, good for you

I'm not asking for mindless grinding we already have that !!! You can have grinding with teamplay facing challenging opponents, opposed to have people preferring solo lvl4 missionning or solo carrier running anoms in 0.0. Basically, I say, no matter what you do in this game requires interacting with pve content, even for pvp players. PVE content won't be fixed soon and this is what everyone has in common in this game.

Challenging opponent and pve don't mix together. The challenge will only last until you have figured out the script/routine then it becomes yet another grind.

As a believer that one of the important parts of an MMO is the social aspect, everything in an MMO is more often than not boring without any interaction with other people. When mining you have time to actually get to know your corpmates while doing something productive, sure grinding and so on could always be better but it shouldn't try to compete with the interaction with other players.

As for EVE being expensive over the years, look at how much time you spend playing the game each month and compare it to the price, 14$ for the time spent each month vs the one time 60$ for a full game and see how much you "spend" an hour playing that. A single player game for that price might last 12 hours if you are lucky, maybe some replay-worth and you are looking at 24-30 hours before tiring on it.

What was most worth it?

I'll do this organized in bullet list format:

1. I think you are equivocating fun with excitement, additionally, fun is a realative term. What you find fun, and what I find fun could be worlds apart. For example, My Father, has "fun" doing the mathmatics it takes to fly a helicopter, I however do not. And by the list of gaes you find "fun" I am extracting that you rather enjoy a rush during gameplay. In that I would advise to play PvP a little more. There is nothing like the rush of amost getting destroyed and your last ECM drone saving your ship with a lucky jam, turning off the enemy warp scram.

2. Spending money on an MMO is part of the game. Weather it is in-game items, or a sub. You are going t spend money. Same with console titles or offline/ non-persistant games such as Diablo 3.

3. All games have a lifespan, WoW is at the end, SWTOR is just beginning, and EVE is in the middle somewhere. There will be ups and downs. IT all depends on the player community as far as MMOs go.

4. Lastly, Not to be mean really. If you are not enjoying a game, then it is time to move on. You played for 4 years, and that is a considerable time to play a single game. Similar to my experiance with SWG (Star Wars Galaxies). So , in the end, if you are not having fun, stop playing. You obviouuly were aware of the player community, and the rest of us players still playing appriciate the feedback and suggestions you submit to CCP and to other players. If you decide to stop playing, you may be missed.

I agree with you, what I find fun might not be fun for someone else and my post wasn't about that.

Let me ask you all something, besides the social interaction between players, which new Eve features brought more fun to the game ? By that I mean, you're exciting to log in to play that new feature

If you answer stuff like the new calendar, or new filters or new inventory UI then you're most likely in denial !
If you played the game for 4 years you'll realize those new fun features are very few and the focus in the past and present from CCP is OFF TARGET. Sure you need to tweak and fix broken mechanics, but they need to throw us a bone once in a while too. That's one of the point of my post, i'm not trying to infuriate anyone.

PS Very sorry I mentioned Diablo 3, I guess you need to suffer from mental health to play this game or any other game except Eve of course

You're most likely part of a minority, I'm glad you enjoy to play Eve the way you are and I hope you're happy in your heart. I'm just not sure CCP should develop the game around your play style !
