http://www.inc.com/minda-zetlin/listening-to-complainers-is-bad-for-your-brain.html

So does this mean that reading the EVE General Discussion Forum is turning us all into ******* and making us dumber? Shocked

From the article:
Quote:
"The brain works more like a muscle than we thought," Blake says. "So if you're pinned in a corner for too long listening to someone being negative, you're more likely to behave that way as well."

Even worse, being exposed to too much complaining can actually make you dumb. Research shows that exposure to 30 minutes or more of negativity--including viewing such material on TV--actually peels away neurons in the brain's hippocampus. "That's the part of your brain you need for problem solving," he says. "Basically, it turns your brain to mush."

This just explains so much for this forum ... Ugh

valid approach I guess.

Than again, the person could be telling you to stop critical thought or worse, do not listen to long to people offering well thought out complaints followed by reasonable and valid arguments.

Once you think you have it all, you have actually become ignorant towards everything else.

Nope, he has that covered,

Quote:
"There's a big difference between bringing your attention to something that's awry and a complaint," Blake says. "Typically, people who are complaining don't want a solution; they just want you to join in the indignity of the whole thing.

and while on occasion there are good discussions and well thought out arguments on these boards, there are also a lot of the other type.To be honest, I am a fan of complaining, when done properly, and I believe scepticism a virtue, too many people believe everything they hear or read and never question the source or look for more information. In modern society scepticism is now generally considered a bad thing. It wasn't always so, but that discussion deviates a little too much from EVE. Blink

Edit for bad grammar ... it's already happening ...

I must be immune. I've been reading these forums for years and not once have I gotten any dumber. To be honest, I've probably gotten smarter over time.

Obviously dealing with terrible petitions is the cause of your troubles.

New proposal for people who make terribad petitions --> they get hunted by a GM and podded Twisted

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

Blake is not covering it, you are Blink IMO anyway
Blake could actually be repeating the message to not think critically by assuming complaints are by definition formulated by people who "just" want to join in the indignity of "the whole thing"

..................." In modern society scepticism is now generally considered a bad thing."......

Which probably has nothing to do with this kind "research" going public by being published?

Not saying btw Blake is trying to perpetuate it, just saying.

Once you think you have it all, you have actually become ignorant towards everything else.

I'm sorry to inform you but that article is non-peer-reviewed. It also contains information that is contrary to current understanding of brain function.

The old school was "use it or loose it", i.e., the brain works like a muscle. We now know that the brain atrophies unless stimulated to learn NEW stuff. Learning a new skill, a new song on your instrument, a new game; all that keeps your brain healthy.

Directly wrong is the part about the hippocampus. The hippocampus transcribes short term memories into long term memories. It is NOT used for problem solving directly. The frontal lobes are primarily responsible for problem solving and planning. Furthermore, the hippocampus is typically damaged by alcohol and drug abuse and/or radiation. If anything, the amygdala might be damaged/altered by overstimulation or exposure to negative stimuli, but the hipocampus? You'll have to post a real peer-reviewed article that says that before it is anything close to believable.

Let's keep things factual.

I never said to take the article as gospel, I actually said scepticism is a good thing, but after reading that article the first thing that came into my mind were these forums. It was more for small laughs and a slight jibe at the all the whines and trolls in GD. Blink
