If I do not have a dedicated graphics card, will EVE damage my computer? I have a Sony Vaio with an I5 processor. I am on a trial account. When I shut EVE down after my first session this morning, all the graphics on my computer had turned into a hippie rainbow until I restarted the computer. Its a 1000 dollar plus computer and I am afraid I am gonna smoke it trying to play this game. Polite responses welcome:)

Hi RoidPopper - see system requirements above. I'd suggest you probably do want a graphics card.

Also try playing it in windowed mode (namely fixed window so that it feels like fullscreen). I have heard of some issues where closing EVE causes weird effects coming out of fullscreen mode.

Several years ago I was playing on an old HP desktop that didn't have a video card either. The game was sluggish, but I tolerated it. I was running under minimum spec, but my computer never got "fried." However, graphics in eve were much different than but the same can be said about my old desktop and your laptop in the sense of performance.

If you do play, I could only imagine it would be a rather sluggish experience, but if you don't mind it- I don't see why you couldn't play without the worry of damaging your system. Just make sure you disable Captain's Quarters (this is when you see your pilot walking around in a station) and switch it over to where you only see your ship. Also, I would lower all of your graphic settings to the lowest setting and you'll be alright.

As for the rainbow effect, I use to get that as well and just a simple restart of your laptop should fix the problem. I would though advise you though to look into a better performing gaming PC. You can pick up a decent one on NewEgg for about $300-$400. Another bit of advice for you; only play one character and do not play multiple accounts at the same time.

With a sluggish PC you need to remember that you only enjoying some of the eve experience, you will not want to engage in ANY pvp whatsoever, or you will most likely lose your ship due to latency and poor fps.

Hope this helps and Welcome to Eve!

Thank you all for the advice and suggestions. I appreciate them quite a bit and i feel a lot better now. It just freaked me out a bit to see a hippy rainbow all over my desktop when shutting down the game:)

The computer is a Sony Vaio L series all-in-one with an I5 2410M CPU. 4 GB ram, and about 816 GB of free hard disk space. The only thing missing was a dedicated video card. I have fried a video card playing EVE before, (a couple years ago in an HP that was Frankensteined by my nephew). Wish me luck:)

Rule #1 of EVE-Online graphics chip preservation : SELECT "INTERVAL ONE" IN ESC MENU instead of "Interval immediate" or "interval default" as the first thing you can do after EVE loads.

Second thing you should do is go into whatever graphics options you have inside the OS drivers and select "max pre-rendered frames = 1" or even = 0 (the default is 3).
Might probably not be available on graphics options for intel integrated graphics, haven't checked, always use discrete graphics for games (it's a shame to not have at least an entry-level laptop graphics card, it's not that expensive at all).
Alternatively, try limiting the maximum dynamic overclocking of the integrated graphics, if that option exists anywhere.

Excellent advice. Thank you very much. I checked at CanYouRunIt.com and everything but the graphics card passed with flying colors. I have Intel Family HD Graphics and the game runs fine as long as I am careful with my settings I am hoping I will be fine here. I would hate to have to crack this open because it will need a new back cover, etc.

Using the Windowed version of EVE seems to be keeping it stable. Going full screen automatically messes up my desktop so i will keep using Windowed and cross my fingers and toes:) Thanks again to all of you for your suggestions and advice. This is why I love EVE, the awesome community.
