If I was 14 years old and living with my parents and found out my dad did that. I would beat his ass. Then I would beat his ass in eve.

You did the right thing, and much respect goes out to you. The lesson learned is that if you value something you at least guard it with attentiveness. Hopefully this is a lesson he'll carry back to RL.

Yeah I can already think of a few situations where the lesson can be applied:

"Don't leave your bike outside unattended, it's gonna get stolen...remember the mining ship". :)

This sounds similar to my story. Now for those of you that don't know me, I'm a father. My son is getting up there in years (He's ten years old). So anyways I went ahead and bought him a Eve online subscription and he started playing. He'd come into my home office and regale me of his exploits, his daring heroics against pirates. So I asked him what his favorite race of ships were to play, and he said, I swear to god guys "Gallente"

His mother cried a little after I kicked him out of the house, and she was a little mad when I shot him like the mad dog he was as he tried to run away.

Am I doing this right eve forums?

This just reminds me how most parents treat their children like prisoners and try to mould them into something they don't necessarily want to be.

When I was about 7 or 8 we were on a family trip to the swimming pool. I was learning to swim but mostly that entailed splashing around with inflatable armbands on. I said I couldn't swim yet so I'd keep wearing them. My father said 'ok son, that's alright" then then when I'd taken them off, he pushed me into the pool. I called him a b@stard all the time it took for me to swim to the side of the pool.

Moral of the story...

Hmm, first I read that you have an affinity toward pirating peoples missions ingame (not a bad thing really), then I read that you have been neglecting your GF's needs, now i'm reading that you are denying your child the direction he wants to play EvE online which is a game that has several of different ways to play it. Perhaps he wanted to learn how to be a marketing tycoon....

it's bad enough that people in EvE online are constantly punished for not playing the game the way others demand they play it. So, you felt it was necessary to bring that frame of mind into RL? I always thought EvE online was supposed to be a personal adventure (although fictional), not "Chairman Mao's Rules and Bylaws to the Galaxy." ( IE: MY WAY OR ELSE!)

just my two cents and you did ask for opinions. =)

I think you got this all wrong..

No he doesn't. I have 3 accounts that I created for purely suicide ganking purposes. These characters aren't even on my EVEmon screen, nobody knows they are mine. In fact, these accounts remain inactive most part of the year. I only activate them for a month or two, via plex, just for hulkagedon and other special events. I also did the deed when he was staying with his mother (my ex). I'll probably tell him one day, when I'm sure he could understand.

He did asked for ISK after the loss of his ship. He is aware my mains have lots (been playing since 2006). But see, I told him to insure the darn barge and he refused. "Nothing is gonna happen" he said. So no reimbursement for kiddo, no sir. Learn the value of getting nice stuff.

I did threw a few t1 frigates for his new tackling job, those are cheap (hulls only, he needs to fit them himself). With the recent frigate changes they are good for the job.

I have to add... the gankage was last week. This weekend he started flying with friends on a few gangs. I logged on TS, out of game just to see how he was doing. You can't imagine how proud I was when listening to him on comms:

Friend - "He warped out, heading to the other gate"...
Son - "In position at the other gate... I see him... got point! got point! warp to me!!!"
Friends - "Hold him hold him! on the way..."

*me sheds tear*

That one dropped 2 Battlecuiser BPOs, faction ammo and some skillbooks. My son's cut was almost 200m... not bad.

My teenage son plays EvE. Sometimes he gets this carebearish ideas about mining AFK... so I logged with some alts and ganked him. I felt sorry from popping his ship, but I felt I did the right thing.

You know, I don't let him play on school days... only on weekends and just for a few hours. And he he's gonna use those few hours to AFK mine? No sir...

I talked with some friends to take my son under their wing... he's now doing tackling jobs and learning how to use actual teamwork and voice comms which I think are good skills that could serve him well in RL later on...

If I were your son I'd get someone to infiltrate your corp and rob you blind to teach you a lesson.

That would be OK. He will get the tip-o-the-hat' if he can pull that off.

A less destructive lesson would be docking his mining ship and warping his pod to a safe spot while he's not looking. A nice startling "wtf?" moment and then the relief of finding his ship in the hangar when he docks. It's a fun prank--one I've actually done to a friend who fell asleep at his PC--and teaches a valuable lesson about why you shouldn't afk mine.

Of course, such a lesson might still need to be reinforced with a gank.

I would imagine it to be more fun, to look up where his med clone is based and dock his pod at that station. Twisted
