What's the future of the EVE Online Graphics Engine?

As the topic says, what is the future of the EVE Online graphics engine?

We got Trinity II in 2007, it’s coming up to 4 years old next month and even if it is 12 months away, how is the development of Trinity III coming along?

Are we talking DX11? DX12?

Are we going to see new graphics effects ‘like depth of field and motion blur?

What’s the plan?

Well considering they are still updating the Texture shaders on all the old ships still and have gone on record for saying that even with the additon of the Incarna engine they are pleased with how the old one still holds up. I'd say no, best they keep working on this one before throwing a perfectly good one out the window, also they DID add new effects such as light shafts and improved shaders before Incarna, best to add not overhaul if it doesnt need it.

Please, no! These effects do nothing but blur your screen and degrade visual quality.

As for your original question, I wouldn't expect anything for the next few years. The Incarna (World of Darkness) engine is still in development, and Eve online still needs to have ship models moved over to the new texture system. Remember the improved scorpion model? Apparently the same treatment will be given to all other ships, someday.

I'd expect various small improvements like god rays in Apocrypha and the aforementioned redone ship models, but I seriously don't expect any real overhauls for another 4 years or so. The Eve online population is leveling out (or dropping), money is tight, CCP has 2 other games to get onto market, and in space graphics improvements are probably already on the bottom of the list.

People whine about having to ditch their 10 year old graphics cards to support SM3, why the hell would the trinity engine be facing another core redesign?

The reality is that they can just add new shaders whenever they need to, new models and higher res textures don't need a completely new engine. Nor does adding DX11 related stuff.

Would be better to completely revemp the combat engine. With stuff like Line of Sight, and a bunch of completely new mechanics that refresh the core game play.

Is Depth of Field really such a good idea when you're dealing with objects of such large ranges, with sizes ranging from drones to planets, and distances ranging from meters to AU?

no, since it will make the server have an heart attack every time you shoot something.

They're going back and remodeling all ships to a new shader variant thats less stressful and allows for recolors. So far it seems they havent capped out the current engine at all.

The new roll engine that they are utlimately shooting for however would be closer to what you saw in the emyerian age trailer I think it was at the end.

More to the point, you really wouldn't have much bokeh when your camera is set to ∞.

The server don't care about and has no clue how your graphics card chooses to render ships in space. It just has to send you the co-ordinates (which it already does), and if DoF was implemented, your computer alone would have the responsibility to turn certain ships into ugly smudges of pixels on your screen.

Although the OP is wrong, NEW EFFECTS AND SKYBOXES WOULD BE NICE...

Thats not an excuse is it? But shall we say x3 (yes its no mmo) buts its still over 5 years old and looks better than eve.. Seriously get out a bit more and see how graphics have moved on. Eve used to be cutting edge, its about 3 years behind now...at least...

is this the same excuse we are gonna keep using forever and ever..funny how other mmos manage to do it...eh? bored of hearing this same damn excuse its boring and getting old...

invest in more hardware, look at new technology, revisit and fix old code, its really not that difficult..

Until the a lot of player base can accept not needing to have 2-3 versions of the game running concurrently, there won't be a dx11 client for a very long time.

The whines about WiS GFX load (even though it had better performance than most fps or rpg style games) should provide you with a clue.

X3 seriously did not have better graphics, they where cheaper per effect though.

I would much rather see the new models, turret effects, shields & damage type effects, armour damage etc than a new engine.

Also the thing I would like to see the most (and I think would actually help a lot of people get into the game) is when a weapon misses, it actually misses your ship. It seems a shame that a lot of the actual physics of tracking and transversal is calculated but it is not represented graphically. It would make fleet battles look phenomenal if it is possible to do with current tech.
