Because you can sell Plex and get ISK out of it. Good luck doing the same with a subscription.

I get my plex from shattered crystal in us dollars which works out to around £11.50 per plex, but at £7.50 per month i'm seriously concidering a 1 year subBig smile

If you can afford the 1 year sub I'd go for that, as you've noticed, it's cheaper overall. I was doing that for a while and you save quite a bit.

From a purely business perspective, a monthly sub is worth more than a Plex purchase because it's more predictable and allows more accurate forecasting from quarter to quarter. Expensive PLEX may be CCP's way of nudging people back to monthly subs.

CCP may want to dry up some of the PLEX in-game as well. PLEX usage may skew CCP's revenue numbers too much because of the lag between buying a PLEX and actually consuming it for game-time.

That's not quite true. The only way for a PLEX to make it into the game is for someone to buy it for real money, and CCP sets those prices independently of the EVE market. Once in-game, of course, the PLEX is subject to the same supply/demand mechanic as any other good...with the exception that once consumed for game-time, it can only be "replaced" if someone pays real-life money for another one and injects it into the EVE economy.

I checked the US prices:

1 month game time: $14.95
1 PLEX: $17.49

A 17% markup.

As that is alot smaller than the 70% markup shown by the OP, I would say CCP needs to review and update their prices in the various currencies.

The higher prices comes from the ability to trade that plex for isk , simple as that. Now , if it should be more expensive than actual subscription , is another topic...

Most plex price jumps and drops coincide with bots. Bots keep the demand high which keeps the prices high, usually after any major bot bans the prices will tank. When I use to trade GTCs(before plexes) when CCP did the first Unholy Rage prices plummeted almost 20-30%. So get CCP to do another major bot crack down and it might lessen that difference. Which would be benificial to CCP since it would lower the supply(people might not find it worth it to buy with $$) and for a moment it might spike sales to lessen the stockpile. Since having a lot of plexes sitting on the market is a liability for CCP.

I know there are PLEX speculators :: buy low - sell high. This makes me wonder how much PLEX is floating around and/or being held, i.e. NOT used for game time. One guy posted that he had 30 PLEX waiting for prices to rise.

I'll bet there is a goodly quantity of PLEX recirculatig in the player driven market that somebody originally bought , but has since just been traded among players and not actually used for it's original purpose. That can't be good for CCP.

I'm probably wrong. I'm no economist.

the increase in isk price is a game based thing the fact a sub costs $14.99 but a plex cost $17 or $19 dollars is ccp cashing in on greed they know people will pay that extra price just like those fail fooking moncoles another greed ploy by a failing game that will be FTP in 2 years tops=)

sorry the only way i would ever come back to ccp fan fair is if there was a ***** slap a dev booth, id pay money for that =)

PS: the game was good minus the last 3 years =)

1) It shouldn't really be THAT much more expensive, only about 33% more expensive
2) Each PLEX carries the capacity to activate a trial account, something that's usually charged at ~33% of a month's sub price (~15 USD vs ~20 USD).
3) All PLEX offers in multiples of PLEX (as opposed to a single PLEX) should actually come closer to the price of a monthly sub (only about 14% higher).

So, due to the UK VAT of 20% and the current USD-GBP exchange rate of ~1.57 USD for 1 GBP, right now:
* 1 month of sub should cost ~11.5 GBP (15% more than it does now) -> you're actually benefiting from this !!!
* one single PLEX or a trial account activation should cost ~15.3 GBP (10% less than it costs now) -> not really such a huge deal,
* the 2xPLEX pack should cost about 26.8 GBP, multiple packs similarly, at around 13.4 GBP per PLEX

So, the only reason it costs so much more is because you're paying too little on the basic sub, not that you're paying too much on PLEX.

Eve couldn't survive as a F2P model. The cost to run the servers alone is too high to make it worth wild with that model.

It's actually true, a Plex is effectively CCP's "IOU for future services" and accountants really hate that stuff as it's very difficult to somehow count/convert that into your yearly report.
