Transporting goods for ISK

So I've been playing for a week or so now.. doing some mining, a bunch of level 1 missions, and I am looking out at other things I can do (to help expand my bankroll).

Was thinking about trying my hand at transporting goods.. but have no idea how I might start at that. I am about 18 hours away from being able to fly Amarr cruisers, so I think that will help.

So what kind of ship fittings and skills would work well for rapidly transporting goods? As well, what are some general methods of setting up contracts between other players/corps? Is it all done on the forums here, or is it more in-game (shared chat channel?)

If there are any stickied posts in the forums, pointers to them would be very helpful.. I tried looking for some, but couldn't find anything of value.

Thank you!

For small amounts, the Magnate is the best. Otherwise a Bestower will do. The Prorator is a great fast hauler, and even makes trips through lowsec trivial. The Providence is a decent freighter for the larger amounts to move around hisec. Of course you don't have to stick to Amarr for industrials.

You can do:
* Courier missions.
* Courier contracts.
* Buy low, haul, sell higher.
The last one will earn the most of the three.

There are missions for transporting goods. Those should be pretty straight forward for someone with low skills. Go into the agent finder and check those out.

Otherwise, I think you're looking at contracts, which are requests for particular sets of goods.

Unless you have connections with other players, the transporting of goods for isk come down to a few options:

Distribution Missions - Theses don’t pay much in LP or isk but you are getting paid to move stuff. While not a great source of income, it is not a bad idea to check your agent finder for them if you are just looking to ‘fly around empty’. When I get bored I sometimes will grab a hauler and wander the space lanes taking random distribution missions.

Trading. – You buy stuff at one place for cheap and deliver is somewhere else to sell (for profit). You need to be good at math (not great, just good enough to know how to calculate a 5%+ profit margin or your unskilled noobness will be throwing away money on taxes just moving stuff. Although often out of date, this site http://eve-central.com/home/tradefind.html can give you examples of things to look at trading as well as potential profit.

Courier Contracts – This is a contract where you will put down collateral and be given a package to haul within a certain timeframe. This is a player-created contract. I repeat, this is a player-created contract. Some are completely legit, some are blatant scams, some are subtle scams.

A legit one might be move 200,000m3 of stuff from Amarr to Jita for 200,000isk. There might be a 5 million isk collateral. So you would pay 5million isk to pick up the package and you would get back your 5 million isk plus 200,000 isk on delivery. If you fail to deliver because youget blown up, get there late, just can’t get there you don’t get paid and you don’t get back your 5 million isk collateral (the other guy does).

Blatant scam contracts will often have you flying somewhere you cannot go, like an outpost in 0.0 space. These will usually have small cargos, huge payouts, and semi-huge collateral. You take the package and fly to where you are going but cannot deliver and therefore lose your collateral.

A common thing with scam courier contracts is also to make them so large that the only ship to move them is a freighter, which is then ganked by a suicide squad so that they can keep the collateral (which was much higher than the cost of the lost ships).

A subtle courier scam runs along with something called margin trading. This one is interesting because you, as a player, can look at the contents of a courier contract. So long as you don’t unpackage the ‘plastic wrap’ you can see what is inside. What ends up happening is this: You get a moderate level courier contract (10 million isk) and there is one item in the wrap that happens to have a buy order on the market for 20 million isk (but only one, or with a minimum quantity higher than what is available). You break the package and try to sell the item (you lose the 10 million isk collateral, but can sell it for 20 million right? Wrong). The person buying the item doesn’t have enough isk in their wallet to pay you so the order drops and you are stuck with a 10 million isk paperweight.

I will point out though that some players legitimately put stupidly low collaterals on their courier contracts and then discover that their cargo will get stolen. A friend of mine found a contract to move a Maelstrom hull to low-sec, the collateral was only 2 million isk. He now has a new Maelstrom.

In terms of ships, anything that can haul can be used. You will want to consider things like:

Astronautic Rigs – Small (Frigate and Destoryer) or Medium (Cruiser, Battle Cruiser, and Industrials) Cargohold Optimization I (the tech 2 versions are stupid expensive) which only requires the skills Jury Rigging to 3 and Astronautic Rigging to 1. These increase the cargohold size of your ship.

Expanded Cargo Hold II (there are lesser ones, but the skill needed for tech 2 versions is Hull Upgrades 2… half hour of training) these go in low slots on you ship.

Giant Secure Cargo Containers are 3000m3 in size and can hold 3900m3 of cargo. They require Anchoring to level 1 (8 minutes to train).

Since you are Amarr the ships you might want to look at for cargo space are:
Frigate: Magante
Destroyer: Coercer
Cruiser: Augoror
Industrial: Bestower

Hope this is both a help and a warning.

If you want to work for people rather than agents your going to need to be able to bankroll some collateral. Remember that a traders wallet always looks fatter than it is, since 90% of your money is necessary to keep making money.

Unsure what stage you're at financialy but try to save 10-20 mil that you wont ever spend, for covering the collateral cost of player contracts. If you find yourself in need of any extra haulage work give me an EvE mail and i'll be happy to set up some hisec contracts.

Just a nice note - it will probably get quite boring if you do too much hauling. Try not to do it too much, or EvE will quickly turn into a game where you grind to earn ISK rather than have fun.

Having said that, hauling can be very profitable. Just take a look at Red Frog Freight, a well known hauling corp. Their members make a shitload.

Wow - fantastic help - thank you! Keno - I am currently in the 5-6 mn ISK range, but as I build it up, I will let you know. Going to work on my skills and getting a couple ships for fast and slow hauling.. and work on some of those npc missions for now.

Love the name of that corp. P

I understand that it can be a grind and believe me - that's the last thing I want..

For you training your racial Industrial skill would probably be best.
Each level increases how much space you have available for stuff, always a nice bonus.
Then consider more advanced hulls like the Frieghter or Transporters.

They are pretty much exclusively arranged via the contracting system, so theres always a chance everything isn't as straightforward as it seems .. Though it is potentially a good chance for you to make some money

Always check 2 things 1st

You can dock at where the Contract Pickup Point is.
You can dock at where the Contract Drop Off Point is.

ok 3 things
the route between the 2 is 'mostly' safe(ish).

NB.
Eve has some unscroupulous players, who will use contracts to gaurantee an entry on thier killboard with you as the victim.
Always assume that you will be ganked by the contract owner so that they can relieve you of the collaterol fee, avoid this by not using the Autopilot Function.

^^^^^^^^^ THIS! Do yourself a favor; use evecentral trade finder / market tool. You can find trades using any size ship (even a shuttle). Set your trade search time parameters for < 1 hour (0) in busy trade hubs (Jita, Dodixie, Rens, Amarr, Hek) and then more when in less busy places. Use dotlan map site to learn where regions are. Work fast but open a second instance of evecentral and use the market tool to see if there is still a buy order for the stuff at your trade destination before you buy it. Make a bit of money, then go shoot something. :D

since you mentioned mining have you tried mining you're missions....unless it was all courier missions other lvl 1 missions do spawn asteroids and you can mine them out for a very tidy sum, salvaging pays well, if you're in game as the same time as I , I do alot of lvl 4 missions add me to you're contacts so you know when I'm online and I'll run the mission you can salvage and we can split salvage. otherwise contact me in game for some isk making tips.
