NASA should shove their collective foot up Congress' ass and get those shuttles back in the air.

They should save money, and not do anything, since no one cares.

Europe should just build a NASA program, same with particle accelerator, or collider.

NASA should start a kickstarter to raise funding.

The exploration of space is, in my opinion, where we get the majority of technological advances. I'd much rather we excel in technology than warfare.

^ Sadly, that idea doesn't attack very well, or defend itself well.

China has a good idea at least, stuff out there has resources.

Also you mentioned kickstarter, which might **** other people off, but not me.

I agreed with NASA shutting down the shuttle program and handing it to the rusians, or private industry to fill that up. Kickstarter would be more parts of NASA auctioned off to private industries. Which I kind of support, since it seems the only sustainable way to go forward.

Makes sense to abandon the Space Shuttle concept in its current form. There's more that private industry can do now for cheaper that makes the Orbital Insertion Vehicles NASA use obsolete. With the Soyuz the only mass produced spacecraft to have ironed out the majority of bugs and hence cheap and reliable it makes sense to outsource and focus attention on other things, such as the payload.

NASA are prioritising things like Curiosity over the Space Shuttle, and as I understand it the Shuttle wasn't a technological or economic advance over its preprocessors. With Arianspace leading the way the private sector is rapidly developing, with the SpaceX and Skylon programs front and centre.

Methinks that the need to internalise the development of these craft and then subsidise their operation has perhaps hindered development somewhat, so I welcome this new competion. The European Space Association (ESA) is advancing slowly but steadily, so it makes sense for NASA to cut the fat out to try and keep on top with Jaxa, Russian and Chinese programs catching up.

Long term we will be mining asteroids or have a Malthusian Correction event.

By get those shuttles back in the air I mean to spend less on a over inflated military budget fighting needless proxy wars protecting interests that will eventually be depleted and expanding our scope beyond our one little planet of meager squabbles. You don't find this ideal?

Yeah, warfare never pushed technology forward, never ever! Being strong militarily and being good at high tech isn't linked at all!!!

Yeah, it's not like military technology ever gets modified for civilian use or anything. Also I'm so happy DARPA created the internet just so we could play online Big smile

Oh i agree with you, i'm a huge supporter of the work done by the ESA and hope to see us continue to strengthen our ties to Russia (on our side of the pond) my point is that while the shuttle program was a limited success, it was still hugely expensive, incapable of reaching the moon (let alone exploring further) and that the remaining orbiters are flying deathtraps that no sane person who register as airworthy, by all means construct a new fleet of shuttles and build them with systems which match our current technology, but putting the old ones in the air again is just begging for a national tragedy.

NASA should try and make money not just spend it. China is going to start moon mining h3 which is used for fuel cells, china, the largest population on the planet, can be energy independent by 2025 since it will be able to have fuel cells. spend a few hundred billion dollars, never buy oil again? why hasn't the US done that yet.
