thoughts on multiple characters?

Shortly after I started playing this game a few years ago, when I started making same-account alts, I began to come up against what, usually, is a futile impulse: the desire to explain, in story terms, the existence of my three character slots. Not just that, but the fact that the three characters work together even though they are in different corps, do different things, and (being on the same account) never even interact in-game - and yet still share resources freely and otherwise aid each other despite having no real reason to (what, is my industrial alt just some kind of eccentric philanthropist?).
Eventually, without getting into TLDR territory, I made up a story involving illegal neural mods, black market brain-scans and fake identities to allow all of my characters to essentially be the same consciousness. Yes...I can be an RP nerd sometimes, thanks for noticing. Roll
That said, I'm curious: has anyone else ever thought about stuff like this, and felt compelled to explain this, or any other 'meta', mechanical aspects of the game in in-story terms? What sorts of things did you come up with to justify your unrelated characters' willingness to work together despite generally being ruthless transhuman profiteers...or anything else that you felt needed an explanation?
Or am I the only one who does this...?

Oh, I've wondered about loading cargo and stuff (I assume startrek like transporters are used) and other things.

As for alts, my characters are totally unrelated, and don't share any resources accept for the unavoidable skill training, which is something I sometimes think about finding an RP explantion for, but I mostly ignore it. It's mostly not an issue that really needs explaining anyway. Not like near-instant cargo transfers across thousands of meters. Unless, of course you RP that your alts are related.

I think the general consensus, or assumption, among the RP community is that one's alts are not the same person (although some have 'families'), but I don't think anyone would really object to a capsuleer having multiple identities such as in your case. I've seen way stranger things in EVE.

I make all my alts relatives of my main. I think it just makes more sense that way.

Cargo drones move things about in space, and much like camera drones, they are not represented on your HUD...

Skill training is is a process by which the relevent information is written directly into your brain, much faster than can be achieved by normal learning methods.

It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then, and it's a poor sort of memory that only works backward.

I kind of like that idea of the characters sharing a consciousness via illegal brain scans, etc. An alliance/consortium of sorts of people who realize they can achieve more as one entity with undivided goals than as separate individuals. A purely practical and pragmatic arrangement by people wanting to get an edge in the very competitive world of New Eden. A pretty bizarre concept. But maybe not that much more bizarre than the idea of clones, psyches digitized as transferrable neural maps, and immortality.

Thanks, Sam. What you describe is a different take on the idea than what I envision, but very intriguing as well. Given how much general weirdness New Eden contains, I could definitely credit the idea of a cadre of powerful people 'unifying' themselves by merging their consciousnesses...it's no more strange than stuff that pops up in the prime fiction, and makes for some cool RP concepts.
I envision all my characters coming from the efforts of my main, who essentially collects neural profiles, through a wide variety of legally dubious methods. The personalities of the alts are other capsuleers who, due to unique circumstances, allowed themselves to die for real (those little 'RIP' messages you get when a corp-mate deletes a character? Where do their brain scans and medical data go? The neural data of someone who's been trained to resist mind-lock and can run a capsule would be incredibly valuable to certain people). Kinda goes against the whole 'immortal ubermensch' capsuleer concept, I know, but there's precedent in the fluff for eggers not wanting to live forever. He uses these complete personalities as 'baselines', so he can use a pod in his alt-selves without mind-locking, but is capable of storing memories of his 'other selves' inside each of his identities, so that no matter 'who' he is he remembers all of his selves. From there, he uses his collection of neural data to modify mind and personality to better suit his ideal, and to keep himself mentally stable while being at least 3 people.
Basically, I like the idea of a capsuleer who is as much of a transhuman with is mind as with his body. We already upload knowledge straight to our brains (skill training) and change our mental attributes to suit our convenience (neural remaps), so I figure it's a small hop to actual personality reconfiguration.

Just my .02 ISK.

Interesting! A good basis for a fiction piece, I'd say. And those RIPed characters... couldn't an unscrupulous lab save their transneural burning scans for future use? Say, to sell? (You kind of alluded to that-- I'm just extrapolating on the idea a bit). Or for that matter, why would they have to be the scans of deceased persons? A scan of highly skilled person could be very valuable indeed. And, I suppose, infinitely reproducable (the way an RL mp3 file can be infinitely copied and shared). The victim might not even ever know that his scan was been reproduced and is being used by other individuals. Hmm....

Definitely...and this concept also makes me think of the Intaki Syndicate. They haven't gotten that much attention in the fluff, but we know a few things, such as:

1) the Intaki practice a form of personality transfer quite similar to the capsuleer cloning process, with technological aids.

2) the Syndicate is known for being an unscrupulous black market hub, that nonetheless maintains ties with Empire space.

When I imagine how a 'neural black market' could come into being, and where it might be centered, I tend to imagine rogue Intaki scientists out in Syndicate, collaborating on research projects banned by CONCORD and perhaps using resources and neural data stolen from the empires, pillaged by pirates, bought from crazed transhumanists like Sansha's Nation...I already imagine the pirate factions as abusing clone tech to generate rank and file troops (they suffer such staggering losses, after all) so from there it's not hard to imagine a whole trade in black market cloning/brain-scanning. And you raise a good point - there could be scans of still-living capsuleers floating around said black market, without anyone ever realizing they've been stolen.

For some reason, the idea of the stereotypically placid, techno-Buddhist Intaki being involved in stuff like this appeals to me immensely. If you think about it, the whole 'rebirth' concept that the Intaki use is unbelievably creepy anyway (essentially killing the personality that the original child would have had, by overwriting it with the personality of the reborn - immortality via human sacrifice, in a way), so it seems like there really should be a whole 'dark side' to Intaki involvement in the development of modern clone tech.
