C5-6 Site Running: Carrier + BSs

So, people ask about c5-6 site running a lot.
People generally give them information on how to do it which tends to range from out right horrible to mediocre.
I have decided to put together some guides on various WH activities and I'm starting with my no dread site running guide, enjoy.

As a disclaimer, none of this information is a secret anymore so bite me if you think I shouldn't be putting this out there.
The way I see it, more people running sites = more PVP targets.

Running sites with a triage carrier for reps and battleships for DPS is the best way to run C5-6 sites if you do not have dreads available.

What you need:
1 triage carrier (Archon by far the best, they all work tho.)
3 or more DPS BSs (5-6 is a good number)
1 fleet booster (not strictly needed but the carrier pilot better be on the ball if you don't have one)
1 Loki (optional but helpful)
1 Noctis

The carrier needs to have a cap transfer and at least 2 armour/shield reps. Fit should be standard triage, 2 local reps with 1 EANM, cap mods everywhere else, T2 CCCs.
The BSs need to be able to hit 35+ KM with good DPS and have a good tank. Basic numbers I recommend is at least 120k EHP before boosts and 70%+ resists across the board.
Use sentry drones for added DPS, recommend using T1 bouncers so you can treat them like ammo.
You will lose a few of them over time so carry spare in cargo and fit them into your drone bay off the carrier. Recommend also having a set or two of EC drones in cargo, just in case.
Fleet booster needs to be running the 3 tank links, web range link if using a loki and the ewar strength link doesn’t hurt either.

The method is fairly simple, you just warp the carrier into a site and warp the BSs to it.
The BSs shoot stuff, carrier reps them and gives them cap.
A Loki helps a lot with webbing the cruisers and use it to kill frigs. The BSs can still kill the cruisers without it but you'll need to use drones on the frigs.

This method works well for both shield and armour tanks but I recommend going for armour since the armour BSs and carriers have a PVP use whereas the shield ones really do not.

Recommended BSs for armour: Navy Geddon, Vindicator, Machariel
Recommended BSs for shield: Nightmare, Vindicator, Machariel, Torp Golem/CNR (needs T2 range rigs)

Personal favorite is the Navy Geddon. It has great DPS and the best tank out of the armour BSs. It can also fit a cap transfer which means you can cap chain them for cap stability when not getting neuted.

Recommended Navy Geddon fit:

Bouncer I x5

Note that you may want to drop a heat sink and fit a second plate if you’re new at it and/or the carrier pilot is not experienced at doing sites this way.
If you do not have a fleet booster, you definitely want a second plate.

Use the same tank on the other BSs. Mid slots should always be 1 TP and the rest tracking comps. Play around in EFT to determine which scripts/ammo to use so you get around 36km optimal.
Vindicators will want to fit a sensor booster due to their terrible locking range. Yes, you need to fit rails but even so, the vindicator is the highest DPS BS out to 40km.
Machariels will actually do more DPS out to 40km with ACs but they burn through ammo very fast so use T1. I recommend fitting atry and using faction ammo. Note that you need a 3% PG implant to fit a full rack of 1400s.

You can take this fleet into the static but be careful on your mass calculations.
Always store 2 BSs in the carrier for mass reduction.

Hey Jack,

Thanks for the detailed post. Question on the crystal choice on the navy geddon fit: Why Imperial Navy Xray over say Scorch? We're fairly recent to C5s but it looked like some of the battleships were out to 70km. Are the escalation waves pretty much within 40km? Is there a tracking issue with Scorch inside that 40km range? (I'm not in game at the moment so I can't check if there's a tracking penalty). If it's something where you just switch crystals out based on need, got it.

Thanks again,

Svo.

well, switch the crystals as needed but the escalation BSs orbit at ~35km so that's the best DPS at that range.
scorch is also good obviously but does less dps and costs more (if you care).
use tracking scripts if you use scorch since you dont need the range.

I basically tried it this way about 1.5 years ago when I was first able to use an Archon. I put one into a C5 and organized "events" where I and some corpmates would go there to farm C5 sites (we usually lived in a C2).

But, it turned out the ISK/hour was terrible. It wasn't even 100m/hour per player. For all the added effort and risk I got not even half of what I get solo in a c3. Some blame lies with the corpmates who didn't have very good BS skills, but even with able pilots it would not have been a lot better... certainly less than 200m/hour. My conclusion was that capital escalations are not worth it unless you do it with Dreads.

Or you could simply use dreads and webs and run a fully escalated anom in 20 minutes.

but yeah, what Jack described is pretty much how everyone started in C5's/6

Home sites would be wasted if not fully escalated, but this is good if you cannot field dreads or multiple carriers. I'd suggest waiting until your dread/carrier pilots log on to run your home sites, though.

Well, RR Tengus in home can be shoved up Uranus, but they're perfectly fine in a static. Can't hate an 8x Tengu gang running C6 anoms/Mags/Radars... (edit) Plus, you've conserved mass on your WH to reship in case your scout finds some PvP down the pipe.

If you have a gangbooster and people don't have scrubby resists on the battleships you won't need to triage - but always have a triage capable carrier as it makes the difference between getting owned or being able to put up a good fight if you get jumped or should someone accidentally pull the wrong triggers/spawn an extra escalation wave out of sync.

When we were first starting to do C5s we ran with 1x chimera ~5x tengu its not a bad place to start but getting dreads in there massively increases the amount you can make from a C5/6 sites and reduces the time your sitting in space immensely.

One thing Jack touched on but IMO didn't highlight enough - make sure your battleships (or other dps support ships) are capable of applying effective dps in the 35-50km range or otherwise your spending a lot longer killing the escalation spawns increasing the risk of getting jumped and the strain put on the carrier pilot - all too often people try to run with short range damage setups if you don't watch it.

The use of t1 bouncers is another good call - they put down relatively effective dps for what they are in the 35km range against sleeper battleships and are cheap and disposable, if you can use T2 gardes or T2 bouncers all the better but don't under-estimate the usefulness of light drones and sentries.

On our first op EVER in a C5, with no carriers, no dreads, 5 battleships and 2 basilisk we STILL earned 100 million per player in an hour. Something went wrong when you tried :p To be fair though we also got a nice T2 salvage proc that shored up one of our sites to a full 250million.
