Check your privilege!

That's pretty much what he's saying. As appeal is a subjective thing, he's completely entitled to feel that way. It has nothing to do with "privilege."

tbh, you just don't pull it off well. Long hair almost never looks good under a hat, for starters. The shape of your face isn't quite right for that style hat either. But again, it's a matter of taste.

I'm in a similar situation. My father's family has a rather broad head shape that forces us to wear oversized hats, and we generally end up looking silly. Even though I can pull off the "manly man" look the above poster is referring to, I *still* can't do a fedora justice.

Well I was considering cutting my hair. Something classy and stylish. I might choose one of the hairstyles in the character creator. Most of them look neat.

First off I would like to say that this is something that has seriously confused me and that is not easy to do. For some time it has been the policy of goon-swarm and a part of certain internet sub-cultures to make fun of people wearing fedoras. I Xenuria wear a fedora. I have several fedoras in my possession and I choose which one to wear based on my other attire.

Now for some background, The Mittani has on several occasions made fun of my choice in hats and even went so far as to say some hurtful things at fanfest about me and a young individual who just happened to be wearing a fedora. During a CSM roundtable The Mittani incorrectly made a distinction between a trilby and fedoras in general. He was saying that the hat I wore in my CSM photo was a trilby and not a fedora. The fact of the matter is a trilby is a fedora.

Fedora is really a catch all term for hats that do not already have a name of their own as well as a particular subset of hats (normally made of felt) and worn by men.

Now allow me to show you something peculiar.
http://www.themittani.com/ <-- This is the site listed by none other than The Mittani himself as his "official" website.

Does that hat on The Mittani official website look familiar?
That is because it is, it's a fedora.

I see you underlined the part that sane people care about

Also, don't mock fedoras. Indy is not amused.

The thing with hats in general is that only about 10% of the worlds population actually looks good in them. And that percentage drops by a large amount when it comes to Fedoras as the only people who can make the look work are real men and sexy women. Actors like Johnny Depp, Harrison Ford, and Humphrey Bogart (in the picture above) can get away with it because they are real men. The OP however is not a real man nor a sexy woman, though it seems he tries hard to be both.

Hint: Compare the jawlines of all mentioned. Who has chiseled and who has chipmunk?

Not at all, you have every right to wear what ever you please, it is your body after all. I'm just saying that you won't necessarily look good doing it. There are certain looks that can only be pulled off by the select few.

For example, anything worn by an athlete in the Olympics.

Actually...some of those things, even THEY couldn't make look good.

A fedora needs a suit and tie to look right. A trucker ball cap, on the other hand-- that's some all-around, all-purpose headgear. You got one of those, you don't have to worry about bad hair days, or even haircuts for that matter.

I never really got along with Fedora or Red-Hat.
Oh wait, was it a goon-hate thread?

Contrary to some peoples misguided opinions, proper Fedora's do not make you look like a wanna be pimp / jackass. A proper Fedora is classy piece of head ware. If made to order (like all Fedora's should be) then they do a very good job at keeping your hair tidy in the wind, protecting you from some rain and look rather striking.

Yes, they can't exactly be worn with jeans and a t-shirt - it is formal ware. Goes rather well with a long black woolen coat in the winter with a nice pair of shined shoes. Trust me, you don't want to wear one on a hot day. That is what straw hats are for :D
