[updated]

I have my original answer about why the 2 servers. And it is just as I figured, Chinese censorship.

New topic that I wish to openly discuss. More of a fun what-if.... What if the servers were be allowed to merge at some point Lol The wars that would ensue would be epic:

You thought we had power blocs controlling too much space in TQ????? HAHAHAHA!!!! That is laughable after seeing the Serenity SOV map.

However, the server has only been live a month or so...

Compare Sov:

Why do the chinese have a separate server? Doesn't this defeat the entire purpose/logic behind EVE as a game? Being a single server game with all the players affecting each other?

I understand there may be some issues with the Chinese government allowing access. Is this the reason? Or did CCP make the chinese server separate intentionally? I would love to see the two merged. It would give a good shake up to the community. Inject some new life blood.

Or maybe just crash the server when 20,000 bots try to log in from China?

its a chinese law thingy, i think

As far as I understand it, yes. Something to do with the Great Firewall of China.

It's a little worrying really.

China is special. Let's just leave it at that. There is a real reason to it...just not sure if me saying what that reason is could be construed in a bad way.

All I will say is that China's government has something to do with it.

Maybe someone else will expand more on that.

Picture this; Goonswarm double the size and permeating high and lowsec so that one alliance literally owns EVERYTHING just to rub it in the face of Westerners and say CHINA #1 because they KNOW our asses won't work together.

That's why.

Fake Edit: Also moar bots

Yes, that's it. To protect the Chinese from the un-moderated chat that they would be exposed to if they were on the main server.

Yeah, they might all decide they like ponies and start plastering them on the buildings there.

Would be scary.

I think EVE encrypts everything...so they probably had to create a custom version with open air communications so the government can listen in on everything.

If you are worried about 1 alliance ruling everything, don't look at the Chinese Serenity Influence map. there are5 alliances in nullsec that own everything. EVERYTHING

If I remember correctly it is mainly because of chinese laws about how long you can stay online playing games at the same time, think you had to log off every 5 hours and have offtime an unknown amount of time.
This because of alot of deaths in asian gamingcommunity.

I believe that in China it's soon to be illegal, for people to be reincarnated.

Apparently it's because the original Pod Pilot , the Dalai Lama doesn't believe their Hype!

He was asked about sharding EVE and said "No, make it One with Everything" or something.

There are good ships,

And wood ships,

And ships that sail the sea

But the best ships are Spaceships

Trolling, racism and a wilful lack of understanding aside, there are reasons why internet activities in mainland China are restricted. Here is a handy link explaining some of those reasons.

DISCLAIMER* Please note that while the link I provided is not comprehensive, and due to its publicly editable nature may show bias, it does nonetheless provide some basic facts.

Internet Censorship in China

TL;DR: In order for EVE to be brought to as wide an audience as possible, CCP had to conform to local laws in the areas they wanted to operate in.

Hope this helps answer your question - ISD Type40.
