Question regarding DPS in fitting

So I had a question. Being the super-casual that I am, I don't really actively play, so much as I just change skill queues. Something is bugging me though. I finally have the skills required for T2 guns for my Harbinger, but I noticed that I'm actually losing DPS in EFT by switching to them. I use the very basic everyone know what it is build for PvE harbingers:

Hardners
Heat Sinks
Rep
Cap

So I'm only going to illustrate the difference in turret dps as listed in EFT for my current skillset.

Build 1:
7x Heavy Modulated Energy Beam 1 w/ Imperial Navy Multifrequency
Turret DPS: 347.8
17+12 Optimal+Falloff

Build 2:
7x Heavy Pulse Laser 2 w/ Scorch
Turrest DPS: 335.8
22+4.4 Optimal+Falloff

I guess I'm a bit surprised that going to T2 guns isn't a bigger jump in damage. Yes I'm aware I'm comparing Pulse to Beam, but I expected Pulse to have a higher damage rate. Mind you, build 1 isn't actually stable, and requires a couple tracking computers, where-as build 2 is cap stable and can hit from farther out.

Am I also unfairly comparing T2 crystals to T1? Obviously switching to Conflag, the damage jumps significantly, but I'm not that comfortable flying at 7k optimal :p harby is too slow for that (IMHO).

All that aside, I guess I'm having trouble seeing the benefit switching out my fit when I seem to be doing just fine with what I currently have. I would appreciate insight from players who put more than 3 or 4 hours a week into the game though...

I'm not fully familar with lasers but it may be that your skills with pulse lasers is not as high as beams but I think your missing a skill that will help your pulse lasers (specialization of so sort)

First off you are using the 'long range lower damage crystal' Scorch....this will generally give you less DPS than Imperial navy MF

Put imp navy MF in your T2 lasers and you will see a difference. Obviously a bigger difference the higher you medium pulse spec skill goes.

That is the Way, the Tao.

Balance is everything.

Absolutely. Comparing like-for-like crystals you see where pulse destroys beams. Also destroys my optimal. Even with AB I find my tugboat has trouble catching up to L3 cruisers, so I don't know how viable a 7k optimal Harb is. I've only ever flown beam and like the cushion long range gives. Why didn't I spec into T2 beam? Fitting issues mostly. Can't yet get 7x Heavy Beam 2's into my baby.

Do you think build 2, being cap stable, longer range, with only a minor decrease in overall DPS worth it? I can't help but think the better tracking of a pulse laser would benefit me more than just pure raw dps.

I appreciate the replies. I realize my comparison with the crystals was flawed and I should be looking at the bigger picture.

Only missions I have trouble catching stuff are Guristas/Merc missions.

422 dps @ 25km with Scorch helps a lot with those cowards. Angels/Sansha/Blood rats like my ship so much they fly to IN MF range voluntarily and get webbed. Big smile

Look into a tracking computer with both scripts at hand. It should make both of the fits shine, especially the pulse fit using range script.
