The full quote from the article

"Reid says the funding will allow CCP to prepare for an IPO. The company doesn’t have any immediate plans to go public, but he says the money “allows us is to do some of the things you need to do for IPO preparedness,” such as building greater redundancy into its computer systems, so that it’s ready to go public when and if the time is right."

So not going public now, but maybe at some time in the future.

Can you imagine the tax and legal issues with "PLEX for stock"? We'll never see that!

But it would be a new frontier in gaming that they could explore! Don't you want to penetrate into the inner folds of that moist, warm, frontier of gaming?

By the way, since we're already talking, do you want to buy a rifter? I've got the cheapest rifters in Metropolis. If you can find a cheaper rifter, buy it!

66M in annual revenue, and they just had an additional infusion of 20M in convertible bonds.

What rate are they paying on those bonds?
What percentage of the share base will that 20M buy if they are all converted?
Why did they do this? Are they that strapped for cash that they need 20 M to promote Dust and build up internal infrastructure?

So they went to institutional investors. Now the question is, are they banks, or just some private investment houses?
Well, there's this, this and this, for starters…

The thing that is bugging me about such news is that i infer that CCP ran out of money in a more serious fashion then was already known.

Bonds were issued for the money, how does this translate to going public? In a time where going public is more hassle than its worth in most cases at CCPs scale, im curious as to why? To support advertising only?

"We have no current plans to implement Micro-transactions as of this time"

Tick-Tock, Aurum.

"We have no current plans to nerf your Machariel. The size of the Machariel is iconic to it and one of it's defining characteristics that players identify with it."

Tick-Tock, 30%~ smaller.

Honeslty, CCP is very good at not having plans. It shows.

The time to raise money is when you don't need it. Then you're raising money from a position of strength. Anyone with experience in capital markets knows that the shorter the runway, the stiffer the terms.

It's likely CCP is just building a war chest. One thing that can be said about CCP, is that they are very ambitious creatively. Some of those ambitions don't pan out due to poor execution or planning, but they never stop thinking big. It is the one redeeming thing about enduring bad changes to the gaming experience. In most cases, you know they are trying to reach for something better.

Anyway, this is sort of a non-event. Companies do this sort of thing regularly.

QFT

CCP has a wide variety of reasons to be borrowing cash. Especially at or near the launch of a huge new project, why use your own money when you can use someone elses. And usually for less.

Being based in Iceland they probably have a lot of different legalities involved in going public than in the US. In the event they DO an IPO, expect a large portion (majority share) to be withheld by the company or the CEO so that he remains in control.

Also 66m in annual revenue doesn't mean much without the rest of the balance sheet and income statement to look at.

It is highly likely they are finally looking into a real Disaster Recovery/Backup site for EVE. This is going to be highly capital intensive unless they attempt to partner with one of the large cloud vendors to keep it opex. I would have went with an opex model but maybe they like being in the hardware buying business.
