(UPDATED)
Eve combat in general is quite shallow with the exception of large fleet engagements, this can be shown by the increasing number of people afk farming plexs and level 4's, really nothing has been done to put depth and micromanagement into a game that requires very little from a pve perspective.
My proposal:

Add a manual power router button to all ships this button will be a circle with 4 or 5 mini buttons inside. here is a quick mock up.

What will this do!?
This will add more meaning full depth and combat to pve and pvp making blob combat less efective and finding better ways for ships to counter capitals and non caps alike.

this will make combat more responsive ship positioning more tactical and add a whole new sense of ship management to the game. with this mechanic in the game you will not be able to afk l4's and plex's due to the fact that rats will find you'rweak points and exploit them.players will have more to think about keeping them on their toes and at the computer.

why would you do this?
I have been thinking for a fast quick fix to improve eves combat allowing it more player skill based. my self being an ex fps profesional level gamer havent quite found eves combat mechanics to allow 1 player to accell over another in a level that other games allow.

Adds a very "NAVAL" type architecture to the game.

implimentation of this mechanic would require very little re working of the games current code and could easily be up in running in 2 months time max. this mechanic would require very little extra server power and could be coded in a way that the calculations ran by the server would be very streight forward.

pointers!
- When left neutral the ship resistances behave as they do now with a slight (Negative) bonous

- When fully set the ships gain a (Positive) bonous to the selected direction but a (Negative) to any other direction.

-The bigger the ship base the longer the shield directional power booster would take to cycle.

Power routing example:frigate: 10's
cruiser 20's
battle cruiser 40's
battle ship 55's
carrier 1 min 20's
dreadnaught 1 min 50 sec
super carrier 2 min 30 sec
titan 3 min

-The booster would be standard every time you'r in a ship, its not a modual its a part of the capacitor

-The booster would increase you'r base resistance in the direction designated.

-Fleet engagements would have a whole new level of depth( i know ccp is against having manual fleet formations and i am aswell)

-Allows sub caps to have a tactical advantage on caps (so you guys can stop nerfing capitals)

-Gives the player more controll(afking missions is no way for a game to be played if i could afk mega man games as a kid i would have no respect for the actuall tallent that skill brings to the plate.)

I am about 99% certian this is the right direction for eve i have done the plus minus in my head and there really is no dis advantage to implimenting this system except people need to actually play the game now and stop letting eve play the game for them.

Anyways much respect and please feel free to let me know what you guys think, you guys are doing a hell of alot of streemlining and helping new players into the game but i have yet to see some actuall combat improvements aside from slight ship balancing which in the general scheme of things is pretty miniscual to the things that can actually be done to give players more controll, depth, excitement and a new reason for staying with eve online for years to come!

Thank you!

What? No way.

Do you actually believe that eve's combat is "shallow" except for fleet engagements? Do you live under a rock? Eve combat is extremely UNSHALLOW outside of fleet fights and pve where it is perhaps the most shallow for an individual player.

This sort of idea makes no sense within the eve combat system anyway--ships already have rather poor manueverability (I mean, you can double click in space, but it's hard to manuever super exactly), and adding a mechanic, which, as far as I can tell, depends entirely on your ship's facing is dumb. What if you're kiting somebody and have to turn around--do you suddenly have no shields on the front of your ship and instantly die?

This mechanic is pretty much entirely unneeded. EVE is not a twitch game, if you want a game like that, go play MW3 or one of the generic space shooters. EVE is a tactical game and most of the skill in combat relies on making intelligent choices of when to engage, how to engage, and what sort of ship setup you have. That said, there is still plenty of room within a combat situation for ship piloting and module management to play a role.

I can't understand why you think this would be a good thing.

10/10, good troll. "accell"

Maybe the reason you can't "acell over another [player]" is because you're an idiot and eve isn't a game that allows for idiots to "accell." I certainly can and do "accell" in pvp, so I really have no idea what you're talking about.

Also, you might "accell" more if you didn't constantly fly ECM boats. http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/combat_record.php?type=player&name=Emulated&page=1#losses lol.

I kinda stopped reading when I saw something about boosting the direction of shield.

"Mr. Sulu, divert all power to the forward shields!"

"Oh my."

Can you hear them? They are calling to us. It is beautiful. http://thegreattichim.wordpress.com/

Star-Trek Online is over there ---->

This is EVE. Things work fine as they are. There's enough going on in a fight that worrying about what points in the cycle-times I overheat+shield directions+ZOMSH HE'S GONE TO PLAID, where's our 'dictor?!

Up next, we look at tackling Titans by shooting a single Scourge missile through an exhaust port.

no...... you simply time your turn with the ship power core cycle? the direction your facing means nothing if a direction is not set the ship will function as it currently does with minor - adjustments

untrue i can do eye surgery with any frigate with a micro for fun i fly between 2 ships as tight as possiable at 3k km/s

im really suprised people are content with the current blaitant shallow mission running setup. also if you believe that eve is a perfect rendition of a game right now. 1. youare a massive fan boy 2. you are a simpleton 3.your scared of having to press more then 1 button ever 2 minutes.

please if you are a nonsicle person or a fanboy do not post on my ideas that bring more depth and micro management to a game that a 4 yearold child could master with the right ship fitting. you may not fully see the big picture but its there if you look past your pre concieved fail notions.

This does give me any idea though.

What if they made that adaptive armour resist module manually operated? Allow the pilot to decide on the fly how to distribute those resists, rather than have the AI slowly change it according to damage taken. It would make the unit more effective in PVP, and it would require an intelligent and experienced pilot to achieve its full potential.

Black bird is the best ship in the game.... why would i fly anything else. You propose I do a t3 bc nano fit and just cheep the crap out of everyone?

dont rag on ecm pilots when t3 nano is the king of eve at the moment.

this change would bring across much deeper small and large fleet engegements struggeling for position would be much much deeper in fights because you could bait people into location that they think your vaulnerable in.
