POS setup- slight confusion about the Silo Coupling Array

I know the basic details of the coupling array: That it functions as a tiny silo for temporary storage. I am, however, confused on a few things.

1. Why are they needed? From what I've read, they are so you don't lose material when offlining your main silo to collect materials. However, given that the silos tick once per hour...and the whole process of offlining, extracting, and re-onlining the main silo takes what... 15 seconds? The chances of losing a cycle are minute compared to the CPU/Powergrid needed to maintain this array. At least it seems that way to me; I may be missing something.
2. If one wanted to use it, how do you route it to the main silo? I experimented with one on my POS. I was able to route my moon harvester into it, but could not figure out how to have it routed to my main silo. I eventually just gave up and plugged my harvester directly into my main silo and haven't seen any issues...at least any obvious ones.

In the cat-and-mouse game that is low sec, there is no shame in learning to be a better mouse.

They're not needed at all. You might want them in some borderline cases when you don't have enough fitting for a silo, but you can get by with emptying it every 10 hours.
