Salvaging as a career

When I saw "Salvager" described as an actual career path in Eve, I lolled.

http://www.eveonline.com/sandbox/salvager/

Then I decided to try it out.

I tried ninja salvaging mission runners, but most MRs simply warp out to get rats to aggress me, or they simply blew up the wrecks. I reckon I made 5m-10m per hour, but the frustration factor was high.

Then I tried to scout asteroid belts for rat wrecks. Best systems are 0.5 to 0.7. Ice fields are always populated so you'll consistently find wrecks there as well. If you include ninja looting, you can make around 5-10m per hour. The real danger is getting blown up by ratters if you go the ninja looter path.

In low sec, faction war systems seem to be the best. My best find was finding half a dozen player elite wrecks at an abandoned gate camp. I found myself a Sisters probe launcher + other T2 loot and bagged 60m worth of loot and salvage in 5 mins. You will also find ratters in asteroid belts as well, and the rat wrecks can be medium or large sized. I reckon you can make 10m-20m per hour if you include looting and the occasional T2-fitted player wreck. Since we're in low sec, becoming flashy red from looting doesn't matter as everyone is assumed hostile.

Haven't tried null sec yet.

I know lots of salvagers that scan L4 mission hubs and ninja salvage all the wrecks there.
Plenty of BS wrecks laying around.

I made about 120M salvaging the aftermath of one battle in nullsec. (Although that is quite an exceptional number, usually it's around 30-50M, depending on how many TII and TIII wrecks you can get to.)

How'd you get into and out of nullsec without getting blown up? Or were you part of a nullsec alliance?

Honestly my advice is to join HS corp that does a lot of mission running. A lot of mission runner don't slow down to salvage. Another option is to hang out in a mission hub and spam local offering to salvage their missions in exchange for giving them a cut.

PS- The smart way to ninja is to scan them down, warp in a cloaky, bookmark, and come back after they clear the rats. Most of the time they abandon the wrecks any way.

The dangers of entering/exiting null are greatly exaggerated. Seriously. Don't walk into a bubble camp and you're fine.

Yep, what he said. Just click the "Show bubbles" on your map statistics preferences. ;)

just find a ratter corp that rents space...they almost never salvage...almost...so there you have much more income...like a lot onest...but you have to pay a tax depending on the rent ...meaning that you have like 3 -4 ratters...that do like 150 mils just from bounty....then this will not for sure salvage...ok so here there is money to be made..like 1 bil 2 bil per month...and you can make a lot of it locally...by selling stuff that you salvage...or making salvage:)
try to think like this...

He was in one of the alliances which held the field = won be battle.

If you go to null, join a renter alliance, bring a Noctis and make friends with corp/alliance mates which do anomalies, but don't salvage/loot them. Consider paying them a small amount for access, if they don't allow for you to loot/salvage their sites when you make the initial request - you'll make it back.
