I'm pretty stupid, so I was wondering if someone could clear something up for me. I'm not sure if I'm understanding the alchemy numbers. This is taken from the dev blog.

100 Cobalt + 100 Platinum = 1 Unrefined Platinum Technite = 20 Platinum Technite and 90 Platinum

So basically 100 Cobalt + 10 Platinum = 20 Platinum Technite? Is that correct?

That is correct.

However, you will not get that 90 Platinum back until after you refine.

Well yeah, but I doubt anyone's gonna start the process and not finish it. Makes you wonder what CCP are thinking most of the time. If it were me I'd do something like:

100 x + 100 y = 1 unrefined unit x 10 = 5 refined units

As it is now you're getting something that used to be very valuable (tech) for something that's almost worthless (cobalt). It's one thing to nerf something, it's another to completely break the game for thousands of players.

The price'll plummet for sure ... but only to the point where it's just profitable enough to run alchemy POS.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

This is exactly it.

Also do not forget to add in costs for fuel, the fact that each reaction can only produce 20 units per cycle, that doing this or any other alchemy reaction, while it looks good probably will not the best use of your POS. :)

so which is a profitable way to moon mine assuming you don't have access to a tech moon? And which is "nerf level" of this patch for tech moons, or in other words if yesterday a tech moon was worth 100 and today x, how much is "x"?

spoken like a total nub on the matter

Let's assume fuel blocks settle at around 15k per unit, we don't bother with sov or tower fuel bonuses.
Let's assume people go "meh, screw it, cobalt I mine myself is free therefore worthless".
You'll want 300++ mil/mo profit per medium reactor because alchemy is a pain in the posterior compared to regular reactions.
Assume normal reaction will not expect much more than a 100 mil/mo profit, probably less.

via normal reaction, 1 PT = 0.5 tech + 0.5 plat + 0.2 fuel bloc + under 2k ISK profit per unit
via alchemy reaction, 1 PT = 5 cobalt + 0.5 plat + 1 fuel bloc + around 21k ISK profit per unit

so, 0.5 tech = 19k + 0.8 fuel bloc ~= 31k, give or take

therefore tech might still sell at around 60k ISK plus minus a bit just fine.

Or if fuel blocs get cheaper and people are prepared to bother with tech alchemy for far less profit, tech could even drop below 30k.
